Chapter 38 - Food Craving

Theon

I kept silent as I drove her home, she seemed willing to talk, but my mind was stuck in everything I had been feeling.

I left her at home and went to mine, canceling a date I had with Harper, saying that I would go to bed early because I had a headache. And that's what I tried to do. I took a shower, ate something I found in the fridge and went to bed, but sleep didn't come.

I knew what needed to be done, but I didn't know how, and my mind spent the next few hours imagining a solution to the situation I had gotten myself into.

I should not have allowed it to come to this!

My cell phone began to vibrate on the nightstand beside the bed, I reached out to pick it up strangely seeing a message from Sam. It was after two in the morning, I wondered if something had happened.

"Are you awake?"

I decided to call her at once and find out what the problem was and was answered on the first ring.

" Did I wake you up? " Her voice had a guilty tone to it.

" No, I was awake. Did something happen? " I sat up in bed, looking outside again.

" No, don't worry, it's just that I tried to talk to Mike and couldn't," she sighed, "I just need to ask you something.”

Mike... Sam had been seeing him since he returned from Pennsylvania. I didn't know how much that had evolved, but if she tried to talk to him before she talked to me, it was more serious than I expected.

" What happened?”

" Do you know where I can find petit gateau and lemon ice cream to buy? " she asked, "The baby won't let me sleep until I eat this.”

Did that really happen? Sam sometimes felt the urge to eat something, but to the point of not being able to sleep because of it?

" You're not thinking of going out now, are you? It's snowing," I frowned at the window.

" Theon, you don't understand. I have to eat this now or I won't be able to sleep, and I really want to sleep. Just tell me if there's somewhere nearby I can buy it," she pleaded.

" Wait, I'll take care of this," I stood up, "just stay inside.”

I heard her sigh on the other side, but she agreed. I dressed quickly, and in a few minutes I was in the car, looking for an open convenience store.”

After almost half an hour I found one near the airport that sold lemon ice cream and frozen petit gateau. It was after three in the morning when I parked at Sam's door. The lights were on, indicating that she was still awake. I got out of the car and walked straight to the front door, which opened before I rang the bell.

" Did you find it? " she asked anxiously.

" I don't know if it was this, but I brought it," I held up the bag.

She pulled me inside with a smile on her face, reaching up to brush away the little snow that had accumulated on my shoulders and in my hair.

" Sorry about that, but I was desperate," Samantha took the bag from my hands.

I took off my overcoat, enjoying the warmth coming from the heater on, which explained the light pajamas Sam was wearing. Pancake came sniffing at me, but seemed more interested in going back to sleep near the heater.

" It's in the microwave, I'll make it for you," I followed her into the kitchen, hanging my overcoat on the rack by the door.

" Thanks," she hummed.

I prepared everything, and while the cake was in the microwave, I knelt in front of her.

" What are you doing to your mother? " I joked, kissing her belly, feeling my little one move inside.

" He loves to hear your voice," she giggled, "I'm sure he'll be very attached to you.”

" I hope so," I blinked before getting up.

I served the cake and ice cream to Sam, deciding to make one for myself as well. She moaned audibly as she tasted the whole thing, showing all the desire she felt for it.

" You are loving this, aren't you? " Samantha lifted up her pajama bottoms, showing her moving belly.

" What's this? " I put my finger on a small lump that had formed on the top of her belly.

" I think it's his foot," she laughed as the lump disappeared, appearing a little to the side soon after, "he's been kicking me a lot in this area.”

" Son, you weren't even born and you're not giving your mother a break? " I followed her laugh, looking at her happy face.

I reached out and wiped the ice cream on the corner of her mouth, freezing with my hand still on her face, watching our proximity. I could easily lean in and kiss her, the kiss would surely be sweet.

I saw the happy expression on her face replaced by confusion, while Sam frowned as he noticed our situation.

" Do you want another? " I pulled away a little unnerved by the thoughts of a moment ago.

" Of course.”

I stood up, preparing another cake for her, feeling her gaze still confused on me.

" You know, this whole name thing, I think we should pick one right away, shouldn't we? " she commented as I walked over to where she was sitting.

" We've already tried that, but so far nothing “

" I thought of a name," she began timidly, "I don't know if you'll like it, Mike didn't like it very much.”

Did she tell him before she told me? And who does he think he is to have an opinion about it?

" What's the name? " I mumbled, trying to push that feeling away from me.

" Henry" she bit her lower lip "Henry Hurst-Adamos.”

For a moment I mentally analyzed that name, and could visualize our little one.

" Henry is a good name”

" You really like it?”

" Yes," I assured her, bringing my hand to her belly, "it will be our little Henry.”

Sam put her hand on mine, caressing my skin while watching me with a half smile on her face.

" It's late, do you want to spend the night? " she questioned, stroking my hand.

" I don't know," I stammered, my gaze locked on hers.

I didn't feel comfortable accepting this without working things out with Harper or knowing what was going on between her and Mike.

" Come on, Apollo, I'll feel guilty if you have to go out in the snow again. You can go in the morning.”

That convinced me. The initial plan was to occupy the guest room once more, but sleep seemed to have deserted both Sam and me, and we finally settled down together on the couch watching a movie.

" Can I ask you something? " I questioned, after a few minutes of sitting next to her in silence.

" What is it? " she asked, settling herself better on the sofa.

" How are things with you and Mike? “

" Ohh that's ... okay I guess, I'm taking it slow to see where it goes," she leaned her head on my shoulder in search of a comfortable position, "I don't want to rush things too much, but he seems to want something more concrete.”

" And is that what you want? " I decided to probe a little.

" I don't know, we get along well and he's a nice guy," she shrugged, "I think he gives me a little security, maybe like you and Harper.”

Harper... If only she knew.

" I get it," I decided to close the subject for the moment, concentrating on the movie.
