Chapter 40 - Just a scare

Theon

I ended the call then walked over to where my sister was talking to Harper, trying to understand what had happened between the two of us moments ago.

" Harper, I'm sorry, but Samantha…”

" Theon, seriously, are you going to talk about Samantha now? " Callie rolled her eyes as Harper let out a nervous laugh through her tears.

" I know I should just focus on you right now, but she's going to the hospital, and.... “

I felt my heart race as the seriousness of the situation hit me.

" Hospital? What about her? " Callie approached, looking worried, while my ex just watched me.

" A bleed. I don't know what happened, she just said she was going to the hospital," despair began to overwhelm me as I thought about what this could mean, "we chose his name yesterday, and now... “

I felt my lungs closing up, making it harder to breathe with each second. The thought of losing him after everything was heavy, suffocating.

" Theon, hey " Harper held my hand in an attempt to reassure me " she'll be fine, they both will.”

" But…”

" Come on, you're in no condition to drive," she took a deep breath, "I'll take you to the hospital and you'll see that they're okay.”

I blinked in astonishment at this proposal. Was this the same person I had hurt moments ago? But I had no time to lose, I had to get to Samantha and my son!

Callie wished us good luck and asked us to send news as soon as possible, and in a few minutes the two of us were quietly inside the car. I watched the woman beside me, concentrating on the road while I tried to calm myself as much as possible.

Samantha would be fine, Henry would be fine. I needed to believe that.

" Harper, I am so sorry for putting you in this situation.”

" Theon, before we became boyfriend and girlfriend we were friends, I care about you," she cut me off, "and in a way, I care about Samantha too. I may be upset, but I understand how terrifying this situation must be for you, and I don't wish for any harm to come to you. “

I absorbed her words once again feeling terrible for hurting her like that. I shouldn't have involved her in this.

I kept silent until I got to the hospital and then went to the waiting room, where one of the nurses told me to wait after explaining that Samantha was already being attended to and we would have news soon.

Harper sat next to me, remaining silent the whole time, but somehow his presence comforted me.

I kept my head down, counting every second that Sam didn't appreciate, feeling my stomach turn. I should be there with her, not Laffay. He was nothing of significance to her or Henry!

But either way, I was grateful to him for rescuing her quickly.

" Theon " Harper caught my eye after a few minutes.

She indicated the door from which the mother of my son had just emerged, accompanied by Mike. I immediately stood up, heading in her direction. Samantha came forward, enveloping me in a hug, resting her head on my chest. I kissed her scalp before I began to caress her.

" Sam…”

" It was just a scare," I heard her voice, feeling relief begin to wash over me, "he's fine.”

" What happened? " I asked, still feeling her little body next to mine.

" A small vessel in her cervix ruptured," I heard Mike's voice, reminding me of his presence, causing me to pull away from her, "she had an ultrasound and was examined, there's nothing to worry about.”

" Like I said, just a scare. I'm sorry to have alarmed you," she looked embarrassed.

" Thank you for bringing her in," I shook the man's hand, brushing aside the onset of jealousy that threatened to overtake me.

" I'm glad to hear that you're okay, Samantha," Harper smiled, forcing a smile, reminding me of her presence, "I'll call for an uber and let Callie know everything.”

I pulled her away from the other two slightly, lowering my voice then, feeling Samantha's watchful gaze on us.

" I can take you home.”

" No, please," she cut me off, "I want to go alone, Theon. I'm glad everything's okay.”

" Since we're all fine, I guess I'd better go home, right? " Mike spoke up as he saw Harper walk away "I'll keep an eye on her for the rest of the evening. “

" If you need anything, call me," I asked Samantha, even though I imagined that the man would not allow it.

She gave me one last look before walking away with him, leaving me alone in the hospital.

I returned home after a few moments in the hospital waiting room. In the end, I knew I had done the right thing, even though it felt strange. I could no longer keep Harper stuck in that situation, she had a right to find someone who truly valued her for the amazing woman that she is.

But even though I knew I had done the right thing, the feeling was still different, I had gotten used to being with Harper over the last few months and I liked her. For a moment, I thought about sending a message just to check on her and tell her again that I was sorry for everything that happened, but I gave up on that idea, deciding to give her the space she needed.

I hadn't heard from her during the week, sometimes I saw her walking around town, but she seemed to be avoiding me, and I didn't take away her reason. As for Samantha, my attempt to get closer was completely frustrated by Mike, who seemed to have decided to be more present in her life, picking her up from work and even sleeping at her house some days, according to what Lara had told me during the week.

I felt frustrated by this, what could I do? I would like to have a chance to talk to Samantha, but what would I say? I didn't want to intrude on anything in her relationship, especially if she was happy with it.
