Theon
" Are you ready? " I called out to Sam as I made sure that Henry didn't get dirty.
I was in the living room, waiting for her to finish getting ready so we could go to the ceremony that awaited us, but she was taking longer than I thought.
" I'll be down in a minute, Apollo," she shouted in reply, "don't let the pancake get Henry dirty.”
I watched my one-and-a-half year old boy lying on top of the dog with an angelic smile on his face. Maybe we should get him out of there before his mother comes downstairs.
" Henry, come with Daddy," I called, bending down to meet him.
He lifted his head, which had been resting on the dog's back, and opened his smile even wider when he saw me gesturing to call him.
" Papa," he stammered, struggling to get up before running toward me in faltering steps.
He was wearing a small tuxedo and his slightly curly hair, like his mother's, was adorably messy; he will steal the spotlight at this wedding.
" Mama," he called, looking up the stairs before looking me in the eye, holding up both hands, "wher re yu?”
" You need to be patient, Henry," I instructed him, "girls don't like to be rushed when they're getting ready. They need time to make themselves even more beautiful, although even if your mother was wearing pajamas, she would still be perfect.”
" Mama " he called out louder, ignoring all my speech.
" I doubt that pajamas would be better than this," Sam's voice surprised me as the boy threw his body in her direction.
She was coming down the stairs, wearing a long pink dress that outlined her curves, her hair was loose like I liked, and some jewelry completed her look.
" Is it too soon to tell you that you are the most beautiful woman at this party? " I questioned as she took Henry from my arms.
" We're not there yet, so... " I shut her up with a kiss, being pushed away by my son.
" Papa, no," he grunted with a closed expression.
Sam laughed, pulling away from me, while Henry laid his head on her shoulder.
" Why not?" I teased the boy.
" my mama! " he replied.
" And your mama is my girlfriend," I pointed out.
" No, my mama! " he hugged her tight.
" Come on, Theon. We can't be late," Sam laughed, following to the front door.
I complied with her request, finding it strange that Sam was standing in front of the open door with a frown on her face instead of coming out.
" Can you get out of the way at once and let me in? " my grandmother's voice reached my ears.
What is she doing here?
She walked into the living room, ignoring my girlfriend's questions before heading into the kitchen. Sam gave me a meaningful look, causing me to take a deep breath before walking over to my grandmother.
" γιαγιά, what are you doing here? The wedding…”
" I'm not going," she explained.
" Why not? " Sam put Henry down after arriving in the kitchen while my grandmother settled down at the table, pulling a magazine from her purse.
" Because the Brown family will be there. Agnes thinks I'm dead," she referred to Harper's grandmother.
" Okay, I'm probably going to regret asking you this, you crazy old woman," Sam crossed her arms and sighed, "but why does this Agnes think you're dead, and where is your husband?”
" I faked my death a few years ago, Yanis promised not to say anything " she explained naturally " I was tired of her and her friends.”
" You faked your death? " I stared at her.
" Ohh yes, I used to fake my death all the time to get away from people," she shrugged, "as I get older, it's easy to make people believe.”
I stared at her dumbfounded for a while, not knowing how to react to this information when Sam took the lead.
" Okay, there's food in the fridge," she sighed, picking Henry up again, "you can have whatever you want.”
She walked off, leaving me behind. I decided not to contradict her, and just followed my girlfriend to my car that was parked in front of the house. Sam put Henry in his car seat and when we least expected it, we were already seated, waiting for the bride to make her triumphant entrance.
The wedding was to be in the gardens of the Aspen museum, and the whole place was well decorated, causing Sam to increase his efforts to keep Henry quiet on her lap. We stood up as we heard You Raise Me Up, and turned around in time to see a violinist walking quietly down the aisle as he played. A little girl tossing rose petals passed by some time later, before Harper appeared.
She was resplendent in her wedding dress. I had always considered her a beautiful woman, but at that moment, she exuded her happiness for all to see. I watched Jason waiting at the altar, he looked at her like she was the best thing in the world and that made me happy, it was something she deserved.
When we broke up, I thought our friendship would be over, but Harper was better than that. She was there for me in all the important moments, even when I was hurt, and that showed me how much our friendship was worth more than anything.
She walked past us, with her gaze fixed on her future husband, and in a few seconds managed to bridge the entire distance to him.
I remember to this day the sentence she said to me when she told me about her relationship
. "I will be happy for you, I hope you can be happy for me" and yes, I was happy for her.
More than that, I was happy for everything!
I laced Sam's fingers with mine, watching my girlfriend standing there with our son on her lap. If I had known that this was the future that awaited me when Sam called me to tell me she was pregnant, I would not have felt so afraid. Because this was the best thing that could have happened to me!
