Chapter ~I can’t divorce you~

~I can’t divorce you~

When Senator Madu got a call from the doctor this morning, he quickly drove down to the hospital and ran into a party of nurses pushing Nku away in a stretcher and he was forced to meet with the doctor, after getting ignored by the nurses.

“Doctor! Doctor!” he called, panting, “I met some nurses riding nku in a stretcher. They wouldn’t even want me to touch my baby. What is happening doctor?” he asked and when the doctor gave no reply he asked yet further, “I am asking you, doctor. Talk to me! What happened to my baby? The nurses ignored me and that was very embarrassing and now you are doing same. What are you people hiding and what is my fate?”

Already Senator Madu had broken down in tears. He could sense the aura of mortality. Something had happened and he prayed inwardly it wasn’t what he was thinking, even when he got convinced it was it.

“Just perk up, Senator! Put yourself together and accept whatever I am going to tell you in good fate. It is the way of every mortal. I would want you to console yourself, Senator.”

He interjected him, “What am I accepting in good fate? I want to know how my Nku is surviving . Is he back from the coma now and where were the nurses taking him to? Talk to me doctor! What the hell has happened to my baby and what do you mean by the way of every mortal?” the doctor hesitated and he barked anxiously, “Talk to me, doctor!”

“Be of good cheer, Senator. We tried our best…we” he snorted, Nku passed on this morning. We tried our best and gave him the purest of artificial oxygen but it seems he was fated to go. Do accept my sympathy…”

“What are you talking about , doctor? I didn’t understand what you just said. Can you please say it again? I want to get you right. He wiped his tears, bowed his head and cried like a baby, “Nku! Nku! Nku! Nku! You can’t leave me now! No please! Where is he? He is not dead yet! I must see my Nku! No…!” he dashed out and made to the morgue.

“Senator! Senator! Senator!” the doctor called and made after him.

Whenever Gabriela gazed upon her husband, the pang of guilt that hung on her mind reminded her of the infidelity she was yet to commit with Sparacho in Mexico City.

“You came back quite early today sweetheart. It hasn’t been long you left and you are back now. What happened? Have you been sacked or something?” Lucas asked as she sat on his laps, and stroked his long hair, feeling an ounce of regret each time she gazed upon his face his cute blind eyes.

Gabriela shut her eyes, sniffed and wished she could end it peacefully with Lucas rather than hurting him in this way. She wanted a divorce. She would give Lucas enough money and run his eyes surgery also she would reveal to him the pregnancy before Azuaka would reveal it to him. She would quit her job with Aku and relocate to Beijing to have a fresh start after she must have put to bed and given the baby to Azuaka. Thus was her plan. She was fade up.

“I want a divorce,” she said gently and saw Lucas drag a frown, with a slight flinch.

“What did you just say? Did I hear you right or some passer-by said it?” Lucas asked, picking his ears to listen more keenly.

“You heard me right, sweetheart let’s divorce. I don’t want us to continue in this holy marriage,” she said as tears trickled down her cheeks. A sniff.

“What did I do? What happened? Where did I go wrong? Talk to me sweet heart! Do you want me to die of heart attack? We are expecting a baby. We are happy. We are not too rich but we are comfortable! So what would inspire you to take such stance?” Lucas asked in tears and she wiped it.

“Don’t worry my sweetheart. Whatever decision I take right now is the best for us. You are too perfect for me. I don’t deserve you. You deserve to mingle with angels. You are a nice man, Lucas. I feel filthy whenever I am with you. I feel I would hurt you some day and that is what I am avoiding, please do understand me.”

“Gabriela, no! No! You are the angel I need to mingle with. Your imperfection will be forgiven by me. Do you know you are carrying my baby? I can forgive you of anything you do against, me, trust me, except infidelity, I see no reason we should divorce…

At the mention of that, Gabriela tossed his head in regret as heavy tears trickled down her cheeks.

“I am sorry Lucas.” She brought out some papers, “This is the divorce papers. I will assist you to sign them. I will be embarking on a trip to Mexico , once I am back , I will pay bills for your eyes surgery so that you can see again, then I will pay you off and make sure you lack nothing. Please do understand me Lucas.” She sat up, and ran down stairs crying.

Lucas was already crying uneasily. He slammed his hands on the desk and pushed away the divorce papers, once his hands caught them.

“No! Gabriela! No…! Gabreial! Gabriela! Don’t do this to me! Please! Whatever it is we can amend and move on! Gabriela! Please” he cried at the tops of his voice.

And Gabriela was troubled by his cry right in her bedroom. She felt the bleeding of her heart and knew she was already hurting him- something she didn’t want to do. Hastily she shook her head in disapproval, ran down stairs, grabbed the divorce papers and tore them, before stripping her dress, grabbing Lucas on the face, kissing him and leading him to the floor where they lay down

“Please, fuck me, my husband, no more divorce for us. I can’t divorce you…” she whispered…
