Chapter 57

Diana ignored everyone else. She was focused on the battle at hand, they had lost so many soldiers and some were wounded. People wondered how she was not wounded in the war. Well, truthfully, she had been injured and what saved her was the fact that she was a wolf.

She would heal as soon as she got the injury. She was swift and had managed to battle with a dagger against soldiers that held guns.

She also did not know why she had become so fast in everything she did. Fifi and Tisha have tried severally to gain her attention but it was either her ignoring them, or it was Yolanda obstructing their aim. Trisha felt very bad.

The battle was finally over after two weeks and four days. They returned to their campground, victorious. They had won another battle, with more land to their name. Fraco was big enough, Diana could not understand why Eugene was so particular about gaining more possession.

This wasn't the olden and ancient days when kings went to war to take over kingdoms. Even if he got that part of the land, it didn't change the fact that the people who lived there did not belong to him. She wasn't going to bother herself with that for now. She still needed to read the letters and she needed to see Coco and be home with him.

Julitta had told her that once they won a war, they would always give them a few days or week's breaks. At least she could have some privacy to herself. She was too ready to go. With the way she had treated Theodore, she wasn't expecting any form of affection or attention from him at all. All she wanted was to be alone.

Jasyn had also noticed her withdrawn self. She had been a beast on the battlefield but now, she wasn't talking with anyone, not even Julitta.

Did he go too far with the questions? Perhaps he shouldn't have made it so obvious that he was asking the girls. Or if he had known that Fifi would know something about Diana, he wouldn't have told Julitta. He wouldn't have asked her. Or maybe he should have asked her last?

Well, he only asked her because he hoped she would answer all his questions. He didn't expect to ask Fifi or Tisha about Diana. He didn't even expect them to relate to her. His asking was just to fulfill all righteousness.

Now he was in his tent, alone. He didn't know what he was going to do. He didn't know what he wanted to do. Not until Theodore showed up. He was initially skeptical about Theodore's visit since he and Theodore didn't usually have private meetings.

"Theo." He called in surprise. "It's you."

"Yes sir, it's me," Theo said. "Can I come in? I want to speak with you."

Jasyn allowed the man into his tent. "Sit."

Theodore sat down and went quiet.

"What's this about?" Jasyn asked when he noticed that Theodore was not ready to speak.

Theodore cleared his throat. "This is about an unfamiliar topic."

"Unrelated to the war, the army, and the government, but concerning one of the soldiers."

"A female soldier," Theodore said. "Diana to be precise."

"What about Diana?"

"Pardon me for speaking out of place but I kind of feel as if you have feelings for her."

Jasyn stared at Theodore. They used to be friends. Not close friends but at least they were on good terms. Would he let Diana, a woman who wasn't interested in either of them come in between that? The answer was yes. Yes, he would let Diana, a woman who was not interested in either of them and who he wasn't certain would ever be interested in either of them, come in between that.

"Oh," Jasyn said. "What gave you the impression?"

"Well, I have seen how you look at her and honestly, that's how I also look at her," Theodore said. "Jasyn, I know that you have something with Yolanda."

Jasyn's eyebrow came up. "I don't understand you, Theo. First, you accuse me of having feelings for a soldier under my command, then you accuse me of having something with another soldier still under my command."

"What are you trying to imply? That I'm an unfocused man? A two-player?"

"Not at all, sir." Theo was quick to defend his thoughts.

"Then enlighten me," Jasyn said. "For I fail to understand what you're saying."

Theodore sighed deeply. "Listen to me, the other day, Yolanda brought me here and was telling me about how you've spied on Diana and found out so many things about her."

"It's making her unsafe and I think that that is why she has withdrawn."

"Yolanda did what?" Jasyn asked. Somehow he wasn't surprised at all. He had expected her to snitch on him.

"Can you say the same if she is brought here?"

"That is not an issue, Jasyn," Theodore said. "My problem is that she told me some things and told me how to find the proof. Do you think you could allow me to see them?"

"See what exactly?" Jasyn demanded, getting angry.

Theodore chuckled. "No need to get angry, commander Jasyn."

"Yolanda simply told me that you had seized letters from her friend as they were proof of something weird about her."

"All I'm asking is for you to show them to me."

Jasyn smirked. "And since when do I become answerable to you?"

"Since when it concerned Diana," Theodore answered.

"Diana doesn't need you to come to her defense," Jasyn said, leaning over the desk that separated them. Theodore was unfazed. He knew what he came for, and he was going to get it.

"I hope you can say that if-"

"Commander Jasyn, I have to speak to you urgently." Diana's voice came from outside. Jasyn glared at Theodore. Did the man set him up?

"I did nothing," Theodore said, raising his hands in surrender. "I did nothing. I didn't even know she was going to be here."

Jasyn growled. He stood up and walked over to the tent curtain. He opened it and stepped out to speak to Diana.

"I need to speak to you, allow me to come inside," Diana said. "Or is Yolanda there? Because if she is then I will still want to enter."

"Yolanda is not here and..." He paused. "Nothing is going on between -"

"Between you and her?" Diana asked. Then she chuckled. "You must take me for a fool then."

"Never," Jasyn swore. "Listen, I have a matter at hand which I'm still handling, when I'm done with it, I will send it to you."

"It can't wait," Diana said. "I did say it was urgent."

Theodore came out behind Jasyn, smiling softly at Diana. Diana's gaze shifted from Jasyn to the man who stood behind him.

"I almost thought you were into Yolanda, who would have thought that you also did men," Diana said. Her words were sharp and they cut deep.

"No!" Jasyn yelled instantly.

"Jesus, Diana!" Theodore exclaimed. "How can you even say such a thing?!"

"How can I not?" Diana asked in return. "He did say he had an urgent matter he was dealing with, who would have thought you were an urgent matter."

"Theodore is not the matter," Jasyn said.

"You are the matter," Theodore said.

Diana pointed to herself. "Me?"

"Yes." The two men mumbled, sighing. They glanced at each other.

Next thing Diana knew, they sat in Jasyn's tent. She was still waiting for one of them to speak and break the silence. Tell her why they were alone, talking about her and what they were talking about.

"Well...?" She finally asked when it became obvious to her that neither of them was going to speak.

Theodore cleared his throat again. "Listen, Diana, that day you caught Yolanda touching me, it wasn't just that."

"She had gotten me unfocused by what she was saying."

"She told me that Jasyn was spying on you and he had uncovered some dirt about you."

"She also told me where they were and how to find them."

Diana glanced at Jasyn in mild shock. "Why are you spying on me?"

"I wasn't spying on you." Jasyn lied. "I only asked Julitta a few questions about you and that was because the officials in the governor's cabinet kept raising questions about your background."

"And what stopped you from asking me personally?" Diana inquired. "I mean, we have held conversations that should have shown you that I am not that much of a difficult person. So what exactly stopped you?"

"I didn't want to make you uncomfortable," Jasyn said. "Listen, I didn't do any digging on you."

"Yes, he might not have," Theodore answered.

Jasyn held his hands up, shrugging.

"See?"

Theodore smirked. "But he did steal the letters that had been addressed to you since a month or two ago."

Diana gasped dramatically. "You did what? Were they from Sunshine Town?"

"Yes, Yolanda mentioned that," Theodore said.

Diana glared at Jasyn. The man became uncomfortable. He didn't know what Theodore's aim for exposing him was. But he could jolly well deny it. After all, he wasn't subject to any one of them. He could just use his authority to end the matter.

"I didn't do such a thing," Jasyn said, defending himself. "I would never stoop so low."

"But she did mention the box and the passcode," Theodore said. "All I'm asking is for you to give us the box to search."

"If we don't find it, we will apologize to you and Yolanda should be punished for instigating us against you."

"However, if we should find it, you should explain to Diana why you did so."

Jasyn smirked. "Do I need to remind you both that I am your chief commander?"

"Chief commander?" Diana repeated. "Hmm."

"Chief commander... I wonder what Eugene would do if he found out that I've been spied on, not only that, the man who spied on me has stolen all the letters that came to me from my best friend in another town. Then he still had the guts to question the girls I'm camping with."

"Invading my privacy. Perhaps this is more than enough for me to leave the army since I no longer feel safe."

"You won't dare to tell Eugene about this." Jasyn threatened lowly.

"And I dare to." Diana refuted. "Unless you have to tell me why you did that."

"Did what?" Jasyn asked.

"Bring the box out," Diana ordered. "Or I'm leaving here to inform Eugene."

Jasyn glared at her. She glared back at him, smirking as well. The fact that she was confident and there was nothing he could do about it was driving him mad.

"Theo," Diana called. "You know the box right?"

"Yes," Theo answered.

"Find it and open it," Diana ordered. Theodore quickly went to do as he had been told. He only wanted to prove to Diana that he was better than Jasyn.

He went about, finding the box and when he did, he took it and placed it before her on the desk. He put in the password and opened the box.

Diana turned to him, she could see his surprised look and she peeked into the box.

"It's empty." She commented. Jasyn sighed in relief. Then it suddenly dawned on him. Empty?

"Is it empty?" He asked to be sure. That was an even bigger issue for him. He had to figure out who had taken the letters. He couldn't risk Diana seeing those in the hands of the wrong person. Who was the wrongest person to find those? That should be Yolanda.

His face turned grim. Theodore bowed to him in apology.

"I'm sorry for all this sir. I will find Yolanda quickly and inform her of what has just happened."

"No, I think you should get her to come here. She has to repeat what she has told you before." Jasyn said. He didn't want any of them to understand that he was also bothered that those things were missing.

"Diana, what was it that you wanted to speak to me about?"

"When are we going home? I need to take Coco away from here for a while."

"Yeah, that would be in a week," Jasyn said. "We still have that promotion ceremony to do."

Diana nodded and got up. She walked to the exit of the tent then she stopped.

"Jasyn, just in case you want to keep something, don't let Yolanda know about it. Also, a box? That's so ancient."

"Besides, it's so easy to sniff out a paper that has been in Maggie's hands."

"Fifi's betrayal? I could smell it everywhere too. Next time you want to hide something, hide it properly."

Jasyn stared on. Diana had seen it, he knew. Now he could only hope that she would raise it before him one day. Otherwise, he would never be able to save himself.
