Chapter 62

Perhaps she expected that something would have happened when she turned that way. She hoped that she would have been able to kill him off. Rather than that happening, she could feel as if she was glued to the spot, glaring murderously at him.

Eugene acted incognizant of her reaction and simply waved her bye, and he returned to his home. Diana stood there, feeling the cold wind pierce through her skin for a few more minutes.

She was finally able to free herself and leave. She took a cab back to the base. From the moment she entered, she went straight to Jasyn's office.

They had indeed done the promotion ceremony and she was made a commander just like Jasyn proposed. Julitta was her assistant since she was deserving. They gave her her group who she could command.

"Jasyn." She called. "We need to talk."

Jasyn stared at her, wondering what had come over her. She seemed to be in a state of pure rage. He could see the rage in her eyes. He almost loved the feeling and but he didn't want her to go on a rampage, he was still yet to fathom what he had seen on the battlefield.

"What is the matter?" He asked after a moment of silence. "sit."

"Why did you not announce to the soldiers that Eugene instructed for no man to set his eyes on me?"

Jasyn stared at her. He could feel his happiness and excitement crumble. She was mad at him? All the rage she felt was directed at him because he didn't make a rule he knew he couldn't keep.

"Is that why you are seeing in rage?" Jasyn asked softly. He was somehow disappointed.

Diana shook her head. She willed herself to calm down and then she took some deep breaths.

"A letter came in for you, I didn't open it this time," Jasyn said, raising his hands.

Diana glared at him. "You have discovered so much about me, how come you still care about me?"

Jasyn sighed. "I can't explain what I feel when I'm around you."

Diana nodded. Theodore had said the same thing, and Eugene had also said the same thing. Oh but if Calhoun had been even a little sense as to say such a thing to her, she would have stayed.

She would have spent more time with him, even if it was just to serve him. She would have done all that and way more for him, and nothing would have happened to him.

Here she was, in an army of soldiers that had a mission to destroy him and the entire wolves in the Easters country. She hated it so much that she almost began to cry. Not being able to do anything about it?

Eugene could discover that she was missing and sent his army to go at once to Wisteria and start the destruction. How bad could that be?

"Jasyn, tell me everything you know about Eugene," Diana said softly. "I don't have feelings for him, worry not."

Jasyn stared at her. Eugene's life was not something interesting that any sane person or anyone who wanted to remain sane should want to know.

It was surprising that Diana suddenly took interest in the man. He knew something was up. Perhaps if he told her what she wanted to know, she would let him know what he wanted to know as well.

"I don't know much about him, he came to this country and a while later he became the governor. The former governor died mysteriously. Since he was the closest and the next eligible man, he was elected."

"Died mysteriously? What about his background? What did he seem like?"

"He did seem like someone from the east but then he was so mysterious in himself, the governor once told me that he had woken suddenly and found Eugene in his room, seated and reading the newspaper."

"His first reaction was to scream but when he met Eugene's death glare, his voice ceased totally. Almost as if he was being controlled."

"He said he asked Eugene who he was but Eugene ignored him and asked him a question in return, he asked him if he was truly the governor."

"He replied yes and Eugene smiled wickedly. He said he had never seen any smile as wicked as that which Eugene gave him the day he met him. Eugene asked him to introduce him as a distant relative or something that would cause an acceptance in the heart of the people."

"He had no choice but to do so. I don't exactly know what happened next because while he was still speaking to me, his voice began to dwindle and he wrote to me on a piece of paper."

Diana waited for what was written but it wasn't coming. "Well ... What did he write?"

"I don't know, it was in a special language. I couldn't interpret it at all." Jasyn said.

"What did it look like?" Diana inquired. She wanted to leave no stone unturned.

"Uh, I think I still have it. Let me search." Jaysn said, checking through his desk drawers and his pockets and even down to his boots. He eventually found the paper, old and crumpled.

He quickly unfolded it and gave it to Diana. Diana collected it and read it.

This is what happens when I try to tell someone deep things which I have noticed about him, my voice begins to dwindle and I can no longer speak.

In case you ever understand, don't serve him, his purpose is for evil and we don't do evil.

Diana read it to herself. She didn't know how well Jasyn would take it. She shook her head with a defeated sigh.

"I assumed I would know it but it's too strange and foreign for me." She confessed. "This is too bad, we can't now know if there's any reason to be wary of Eugene."

"There is every reason to be wary of Eugene, Diana," Jasyn said. "I know that the man will try to sway you, you shouldn't be swayed by him."

"You all have tried to sway me, Jaysn. Listening to you over Eugene is almost the same thing as listening to Eugene. The only difference is that you don't have a nefarious plan to end a species of living things in existence just because of your wish for revenge."

"Revenge?" Jasyn inquired. "Did you go and have a word with Eugene?"

Diana stared at him. Was she enchanted? How could she not control her mouth anymore? She had given out her secret to Eugene and would now be under his watchful gaze, as if that wasn't bad enough, she had now exposed herself once more to Jasyn.

That meant she wasn't safe here. She had to leave.

"I... I need to go. I'm leaving the campgrounds, I need to spend time with Coco."

"Diana comes here," Jasyn said. "The discussion isn't over yet."

"It is." Diana refuted. "You can't force me to do what I don't wish to do. You can't even force me to speak, Jasyn and last week was enough to prove that."

Jasyn stared at her, mildly surprised. Diana waved the letter in her hand.

"Thank you."

Then she left. Jasyn stood there for another few minutes without sitting down. In truth, he wouldn't have sat down if Yolanda didn't stroll into his office. He didn't want to give her the impression that Diana had walked out on him so he simply stretched his body and sat back.

Yolanda sat opposite him, offering him a sweet calming smile. Jasyn knew that if he wanted Diana he wasn't supposed to have anything to do with Yolanda but the woman seemed to know where and where his weaknesses lay.

She seemed to know what to do to get him in the kind of mood she wanted. At this point, he wasn't going to try and stop the feeling, if Yolanda would give herself to him for free, he would accept it while still keeping Diana for himself.

"You look so stressed." She said softly, reaching out to caress him across the desk that separated them.

"If you want to touch me, you shouldn't stay that far away," Jasyn said. Yolanda grinned. That was proof that he was also loving her presence and that was all she wanted.

Diana walked to her room, took some clothes and while she was at it, Julitta strolled in.

"Diana, what's the matter?" She asked. "Where are you going? Did Jasyn permit us to leave?"

"We aren't the same thing. I can leave now." Diana said. "I just have too much bothering me and I can't stay here. I need fresh air."

"Diana, this is the army. You have to have a lot troubling you, it's the way we stay sane." Julitta explained.

"Maybe for you guys but being in the army was never something I wanted to do." Diana suddenly said.

Julitta was confused. "Huh? Why? I thought you joined because you wanted to put your feelings and strength to good use."

"And when I figure out it's not going to be of good use? What should I do?"

"Huh?" Julitta's confusion rose to a higher point. "What do you mean? What have you discovered? Tell me."

Diana shook her head. She continued putting her clothes into the small bag. Some of Coco's which were still there, she packed them.

"If you want to leave secretly, that bag will be too obvious," Julitta said. "I have something better."

"Okay good, go get it for me."

"First," Julitta bargained. "You have to tell me what you discovered."

Diana stared at her. Couldn't they just allow her to do as she pleased? Of course, she knew that Julitta was trustworthy, but she wanted to play safe. The walls had ears.

"If you will come with me, I will let you in on everything," Diana said. Julitta stared at her for some time. She gave her a single nod.

"I will get the bag, you get Coco."

Diana nodded. Julitta left first and as Diana stood up, the letter which she had placed in her lap, fell off. She bent and grabbed it. Perhaps she could as well read it in privacy.

She tore it open, Maggie's letter was there first.

Hello, sunshine armed with bullets and grenades,

I have sent you warm and cold letters, hoping to at least get a reaction from you and I have gotten nothing.

Rest assured that this is not because I wish to speak to you, it's just because friendship demands that one keep covering for the other.

Just so you know, if I don't hear from you next, I'm not sending any letters from Wisteria again.

Love, Maggie.

Diana shook her head. Now wasn't the time to throw tantrums. She understood how Maggie felt, but she couldn't exactly do anything about it. Doing anything to pacify Maggie would attract more spotlight to herself unless she had Julitta or Tisha send the letter. She smiled.

She opened the letter which came from Wisteria, she knew it was none other than Calhoun, and knowing that he would threaten her was supposed to stop her from reading it, but the thought of hearing from him at all made her happy.

Dearest Diana

She paused the reading. "Did he just call me dearest Diana?" Her cheeks turned red and she continued the letter.

From your beloved king and lover;

"Beloved king and lover? How bold of you, Calhoun." She whispered as she continued reading.

I don't know why you have refused to return home to me. I just want you to know that even if you run to the ends of the earth, I will find you.

I am allowing you to return home by yourself. Even if you feel shy or ashamed to return here. I have designed a means for you to return.

"Shy or ashamed, how rude. I knew the start was only a trap." She murmured.

In seven days we will be having a banquet here in the castle. It's a mask-themed banquet. Meaning you can come, masked. Stay till after the banquet and we shall discuss your position.

"Discuss my position." She repeated. "How convenient."

I am expecting you, Diana. Don't fail me this time. Perhaps this will be the last chance I will give you to come home, willingly.

The next time you shall hear from me, you would be too surprised to refute.

Love, Calhoun.

"Love Calhoun." A deep voice read out from behind her. It sounded so much like Eugene's voice and Diana could feel her blood run cold.
