Chapter Twenty-Nine

Hank turned to Zachary and said, “Zach have you ever heard of anything like that before?” he shook his head and said “I’ve never known anyone to hunt someone down just to give them a chance at their dream. I’ve never met anyone like Angel McDaniel’s.” His secretary behind him said “There isn’t many women like that in the world I guarantee you. Most would be spending all that money she has on tropical vacations and luxury items. I heard tell that she gave Dean Sterling money to get his ranch going again. And she put those horrible Kingsley’s out of business. If the tabloids can be believed she’s done a lot to help a lot of people. It said she took in her two brothers who are identical twins that she’d never known existed. She’s their guardian now, and their fifteen, imagine that. Nineteen years old and already raising two half grown boys, plus running a successful horse ranch, top that off with that center for rehabbed people and horses she’s building, add on to that all of Kingsley’s business interest and her mother’s and she still has time to save the world. If anyone deserves hero status, I’d say its Miss. Angel McDaniel’s.” Hank asked curiously with laughter in his voice “You got all that from the tabloids?” Samantha replied “I’ll have you know I have Facebook as well. It’s not hard to follow celebrities on there. I follow her brother’s as well. That youngest one Kaleb he has an artistic flair, he’s a budding photographer, has pictures of their horses and their vacation to the Maldives. There are pictures of Angel surfing and paddle boarding.” She paused for dramatic effect and said, “Did I mention she’s in a bikini?” She knew that would get a reaction from the brothers and sure enough it did, they had her pulling up Facebook quick fast and in a hurry. When the pictures came into focus, Zach whistled loudly and said “That is, definitely not a lazy debutante right there, that girl’s muscles have muscles. Not in a bad way but my lord she must work out to stay that fit.” Samantha said “According to her brother Jackson, they work out every morning at five AM together in their home gym. To hear both brothers tell it their sister is their idol. She’s truly an Angel in their eyes. Which is the consensus for most people who know her. She’s the golden girl.”

Unaware that across town she was being talked about Angel drove them to the property, she’d called in advance to Grant to have him meet her because she wasn’t sure what to expect. When they pulled up to the main house, she was surprised to see it standing. It looked like no one had touched the property in all the months the Dalton’s had been gone. It was overgrown and beginning to start running down. She noted there would be a lot of repairs that needed to be done. When she mentioned this Henry told her that with the right tools and equipment, he could do all the repairs himself. He’d need help of course but he could do the work. That’s when she dropped the bombshell telling them she was having one million placed in their account. It wasn’t to go hog wild with it was to keep their business afloat until it was viable again. She called the lumberyard and told them to deliver whatever tools and materials Henry needed and charge her for it. His wife Karla said “When we’ve got this place up and running again and back to its former glory, we’d love to have you over for dinner one night. To stay in contact with you.” Angel smiled and said, “That would be wonderful; I’ll bring my brothers with me.” Karla grabbed Angel’s hand and squeezed she said “You just don’t know you’re saving our lives here. This was slowly killing us, now you are breathing life back into us.” Angel told her she was welcome and to let her know if they needed any help with anything.

Her next stop was the Newton place, the Sheriff would be meeting her there, and Dean would even be there to see how it all shook out. More threats were thrown around when Seth was served with papers to vacate the premises immediately. When Elizabeth went to get in the car with him, the Sheriff stopped her and said, “The ring.” Elizabeth screeched “You’re kidding me, you can’t take my ring!” he said simply “It’s not yours it belonged to the bank and now it belongs to Angel McDaniel’s. As well as the car you’re sitting in. The only vehicle here owned by either of you is the one in Elizabeth’s name.” Which happened to be an old ranch truck she’d used on her parents’ ranch. To say neither of them was happy would be an understatement. Angel looked around and said, “Lord another ranch; I have no idea what I’m going to do with this.” Dean suggested “You could always sell it.” Angel sighed and said “True but then I’d worry about who bought it and how they’d treat you and Henry. I will have to give this some serious thought.”

When she got home, she phoned Zachary and told him that Henry’s place was still standing. It needed a lot of work and Henry had refused a work crew. Zachary suggested that the neighbors all pitch in and have a repair party. Everyone, work all day fixing the place up and then have a BBQ afterward. Angel told him she liked the idea, and she would plan it for that Saturday. She contacted Karla and told her the plan and she was completely for it. Angel talked to her stable hands and staff to see who would care to volunteer. She was pleasantly surprised when they all wanted to help. Cody said if they finished their chores before leaving then with Grants’ men there to guard the home and animals everyone should be okay going. Even her father and grandparents, aunts and uncles wanted to pitch in. Dean was there was well. She was really surprised when Steven showed up in jeans and t-shirt but didn’t let it stop her.

She’d hired a group of men to come in and do all the cooking. They had a huge setup as far as grills went and they promised to have enough food to feed the horde that had showed up to help. By noon everyone was starving and thirsty, for lunch everyone got a pulled pork sandwich and drinks and then was back to work. She was even amazed herself at the amount of work that could be done in just a few hours. When four rolled around the barn was finished repairs had been made, the stables were now ready for any livestock, and the holding pens had been repaired. They had even gotten the majority, of the fence line repaired today. All in all, it had been a great day spent with good people. As the sun went down everyone relaxed and enjoyed a good meal and the people around them. Angel was halfway through with her meal when her cellular rang, it was Devon apparently Seth had tried to be smart and sneak onto Angel’s place, him and Elizabeth both were being detained against their will. Angel sighed heavily and told them she’d be home directly. Which got her the attention of half the men in the place. She said evenly “Seth’s at my place, so is Elizabeth.” She looked at Cody and asked, “Can you load Shadow up with the rest of our horses I’m going to handle this?” at his nod she headed for her truck. She didn’t miss the fact her brothers were trailing her.

When they arrived home, the Sheriff had arrived as well, and he was telling Seth and Elizabeth “You are lucky they didn’t shoot first and ask question later. You are trespassing on private property they had every right to shoot you. And with you having that poison in your possession that means you were either trying to poison her water supply and her animals or her, so which is it?” When they both clammed up, he said “I’ll take that as a confession then, because either way you’ve both committed a crime with premeditation.” He looked at Devon and asked, “Did they get to the water supply?” Devon replied “They were followed from the road where they crossed; they never made it to the tanks. We’ve checked all the animals they seem fine, but we’ve called the vet just in case.” At this point Seth and Elizabeth were ranting on how she should die a slow and painful death. It was actually Elizabeth who let the plan out when she started screaming, they would have never hurt the animals, they wanted to poison Angel, she deserved a slow and painfully agonizing death. Which brought their charge up to conspiring to, commit murder. Everything added together they would be looking at time in an actual jail. It was at this point that vehicles began to stream in, Jackson filled in everyone and all hell broke loose. Angel felt as if she was in a perpetual sense of drama lately and she only hoped it ended with these two in prison.

Angel realized she was extremely lucky to be here tonight surrounded by so many people who loved her and her brothers. She couldn’t have asked for anything more. Angel was actually glad to, get back on an even keel after all the drama, for her the next two weeks were heaven, true they were hectic leading up to the boys’ party, but it was a good hectic.

She had hired a stylist to dress them, they both looked so handsome. They were truly handsome young men. They’d met a few girls and boys during their time here, not a lot of them but some. Friends were bringing their teenagers and it was turning out to be the event of the year here in Houston. There were guards at the doors checking invitations, if you didn’t have one you didn’t get in. Angel couldn’t contain her smile when the Hummer Limousine pulled up with her brothers and their close friends which included Louisa. She was actually the only girl who got invited for the Limo ride which she could see made Louisa the envy of most girls here. If those girls only knew that in their eyes Louisa was like a kid sister. The party itself went off without a hitch and when it came time for their big gift both boys were led to the front of the building where pyrotechnics were going off and their cars sat in the street before them with giant bows on them. The excitement was definitely there sure it was, a relatively cheaper car than the other one, but she’d actually listened to what they wanted. The unfortunate part of a party this elaborate was the press who had shown to take photos of everyone.

When she arrived home, she quickly changed into pajama pants a camisole and pulled on a track jacket before walking out onto her balcony. The night was so clear, you could see all the stars for miles with a flash of heat lightning in the very far distance every once in a while. Moving here had been complete and utter culture shock but she figured she’d made it; she hadn’t buckled under the stress and aggravation.

With everything that had been going on she needed to catch up on her class assignments. So, she was sitting at the patio table on her balcony doing just that. The breeze that was steadily blowing across the land was a nice respite from the heat that engulfed it during the day. It didn’t take her long to finish her work, it never really had and technically she was well ahead of where she was supposed to be. Whereas most students took one or two even three classes online she was taking no less than eight at a time. The difference being with her photographic memory she could remember every word she’d ever read so writing reports and taking test were easy. At the rate she was taking her classes she looked to graduate by December with her Bachelors’ Degree in Criminology. She might even be able to accelerate that date a bit by taking more classes. She was getting all the classes she could take online out of the way before she had to do her lab classes. At the same time, she was going for this degree she was also majoring in Psychology. With her double major and both, course loads she was sure to have a busy time or, most students would but with her IQ level and her ability to think fast and get the work done in practically no time she’d be graduating while most of the students were still struggling.

She’d noted her brothers had also enrolled in courses. Jackson was majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Kaleb was majoring in Photography. She’d been surprised when the Dean of the college had told her that her brothers were trying to accelerate their degrees as well. It was understandable considering they all share IQ’s that were much higher than most people. She would begin her on campus classes next month, as would her brothers. She only hoped that they stayed true to themselves without letting college boys and girls get in the way of their futures. She knew she couldn’t sit around and worry about them she had to trust them to make the right decisions and so far, they had. They were smart young men and they had read all the books she had on deception and how to tell when someone was lying to you. She’d made sure those books were on their Kindle Fire’s so that they would be able to detect deception in someone who wanted something from them. Because there would be girls out there who just wanted their money, as well as fair weather friends who did as well.
