Chapter 39

Luke and I went home to my apartment, and I forced him to stay by then. He's not speaking to me, and he's totally avoiding the question I asked earlier. I know it's a little harsh for me to do this, but I want to know the truth now.

I want to know everything.

"You better get your stories straight, brother, because I'm not going to forgive you if you don't tell me the truth," I said as I rolled my eyes and went to the kitchen.

I'll be cooking tonight since I have a guest who's trying to find a way to get out of my apartment. Luckily, they renovated it before I got back for my protection, and it seems like it's backfiring on him.

"I can't tell you the truth, Adi," he said as he followed me to the kitchen and sat in the high chair in front of the counter.

"So you really know something, huh?" I scoffed.

"Of course, I know everything you wanted to know, but it's complicated right now, and you wouldn't understand it as you're still in a state of recovering things for your current situation," he explained, but I avoid it at all.

"I don't really want a long conversation, Luke, so just tell me what the hell happened," I said, like an order this time.

He refused what I asked him to do and sat on the couch back in the living room. I took a deep breath and just continued to cook for our dinner. I picked an easy pasta recipe and made waffles to lure him into saying anything. It's his favorite, and just by seeing him so satisfied with what he's smelling from my kitchen, I smirked.

I called him after I served the food, and he immediately sat down across the table. He's pigging out on the food I prepared. This is somehow my way of telling him that he should answer everything I want to know. We ate silently, but he suddenly dropped his utensils, and so I looked at him.

"Did you put any serum in here just to interrogate me?" He accused me.

"You're being paranoid, and it doesn't look good on you," I said as I continued to eat again.

I can still sense his look at me, and I just couldn't help but tease him.

"So what if I did put something in anyway?" I suddenly asked, and he instantly glared at me.

"I know you're not going to do that," he said in a calm way this time.

My brother knows me so well. But that doesn't mean that I'll stop forcing him to say something I need to find out.

From the moment we got home, all I could think was how I even agreed with the thought of marrying that guy. As far as I know, I never really had a real encounter or a good conversation with him. All we did before was challenge each other in every debate we were both in. Also, the recent memory that I have of him is when I caught him in the library looking at me. I even rolled my eyes at him that day.

I wonder how we even get to understand each other anyway.

My dinner with my brother went well, but he still won't say anything about it. We are already watching some series on television, but I can still feel the thick air around us. It's a little suffocating, but I should endure it just to make sure that I'll be getting any information tonight.

It's been a few minutes since Luke finally sighed and looked in my direction.

"You know, I can't help it when we're like this," he said to start the conversation.

"Then at least give me an idea about what's going on!" I demanded.

"Okay," he replied, sighed, and spoke again.

"That marriage was for your safety. Apparently, Cooper found out about your identity, and it means that our whole family is compromised by what happened. It's not like we're hiding, but we're trying to avoid any issues and rumors, so what he requested of our mom was to marry you instead. I don't know what happened next, but you seemed so okay with him," Luke explained.

"Can you tell me more?" I asked.

"Your life with him was pretty extravagant. Well, you live in a penthouse and mom and I even saw the both of you in a not so intimate position like you're on top of him while you're talking to each other. You both even enjoy your stay in Maldives for weeks and went back home with pictures that I didn't expect you'll have," Luke continue to talk with even more detailed information.

Upon hearing all of that, I felt a sudden relief in my mind. So my life with him is much easier, I guess. I smiled at the thought of it.

"You're daydreaming in front of me; that's disgusting," Luke commented before he threw a pillow at me.

Well, I couldn't help but smile at the thought. It somehow felt wonderful just to think that there's someone who's willing to be with me. At the same time, I'm a bit confused.

If my mom agreed with the whole idea of letting me marry him, then why didn't she say anything about it the moment I woke up?

Were they just trying to help me recover slowly or what?

The next day, I woke up a little late, so I didn't even bother to choose a nice outfit. I just picked low-waisted jeans and a fitted crop top together with my favorite sneakers again. I felt so lazy today since Luke didn't go home last night and he's been sleeping on my couch up until now.

I got out of my apartment thirty minutes before the class started. I was already in the lobby of the apartment building when I saw a familiar face waiting outside the building.

It's Ysmael.

As soon as I left the building, I approached him.

"What are you doing here?" I asked. He looked so formal with his white long-sleeve polo and checkered gray slacks.

"I'm actually waiting for you," he said before he pulled me by the hand. We walked for minutes before we reached his car. He told me to get in immediately, and so I did. When he got in, he first looked around outside.

"What's happening?" I asked in confusion.

"We need to get out of the streets," he said as he started the engine of his car.

"Why?" I asked again.

"We're being followed."

Like, what the hell?
