Chapter 17

Kaiwan walked out of the bedroom patting his hair dry with a towel as he danced around that morning. He bent over to pick up the remote on the central table and played his favorite song before he dropped it, having formed the habit of listening to music before he left for work every morning.

He turned to fetch a cup of barley tea when he saw her sitting on one of the dining chairs and he jumped in fright.

"What are you doing here?"

"What's wrong?" She asked, confused.

It all came back to him, just then. He had offered to walk her down but she had refused, saying she had a lot of thinking to do and he had bade her goodbye before he headed downstairs.

He had waited for a while to tidy up his office and was about to leave when a part of him told him to check if she had left.

He had been surprised to still see her sleeping there and had understood that she had no where to go, so he had taken her home.

She had seemed surprised that he was living alone and he had explained it was due to some circumstances.

"Sorry for intruding on you like this." She had sounded apologetic about it.

"Since we're on the same side now, we'll need a place to make our strategy anyway. Think of it like that." He had told her the previous night.

He slowly gnawed at his lower lip wondering how he could have forgotten he had let someone in last night?Shi...So embarrassing. She probably saw everything, right?

"Did you see anything?" He asked.

"I didn't."She replied and turned to mutter."He's crazy..."

"I'm not." He yelled out.

"How dare you look down on your husband?" Someone yelled in front of the station the following morning.

"I can't believe you're still like this even after we divorced for so long. I warned you not to look for me." The station's barista screamed at her ex-husband.

Kaiwan sighed as he hit his forehead with his palm. This wasn't the scene he was hoping to meet on leaving home that morning.

"What? You bitch?...I'll feed your body to the vampires if you don't answer your call, next time. Got it?"

"No." She protested.

"How dare you bitch talk down at me." The man said and made to hit her when Kaiwan, unable to tolerate anymore of it, grabbed his hand.

"Oh my, what makes you think you can behave this way here?" He asked,a smile playing on his lips.

"Who the fuck is this brat?"

"Inspector."She called, surprised to see him.

"Want me to show you what a boxer looks like?" He asked and threw punches, all of which Kaiwan missed.

"But I didn't do anything except in self defense, right?" He asked.

"You're dead." The man yelled.

"I'll show you what happens when you touch one of ours." Kaiwan replied and punched him as the man made to throw a hit.

The boxer was completely caught unaware and Kaiwan used the opportunity to overthrow him.

The barista buried her mouth in her hands as her husband groaned in serious pains and an officer hurried over to slid in cuffs on the man's wrists.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...You have a right to an attorney and if you can't afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Take him in"

"Yes sir." The officer bowed before he dragged him inside.

"Are you okay, ma'am?" Kaiwan turned to the woman and asked.

"I'm fine, Inspector. Thanks so much."

He smiled. "You're one of us and you shouldn't not be roughly treated by anyone." He said before he turned to head in.

No other vampire had caused trouble recently so there was no much work to do. Kaiwan reorganized his office and sent a few things to Zuriña before he stepped out for a smoke.

He slipped in a cigarette into his mouth and was about to light it up when the station's barista walked up to him holding a cup.

"Thank you so much for earlier. I'm sorry I can't do more than this." She bowed.

Kaiwan smiled. "How do you know I love this drink?"

"Is that so?"The barista's face lit up.

"Thank you."

"Inspector." Someone called and he turned to see where it came from. It was the new intern.

"Hey Victor."

His smile froze in seeing the drink in his hand. "I've never seen you drink that before.Don't you usually drink Americano?"

He looked down at the drink before he lifted his eyes to Victor.

"I like this too.By the way,I heard you applied to work here.Things are really intense." He said and took a sip from his drink.

"I came because I wanted to learn from you, detective."He said.

"There's no need to be so formal."

"Yes sir" He replied and Kaiwan slid an arm over his shoulder.

"Lemme guess you were the most popular guy in your school."

"Not really..."He was interrupted by someone and they turned to see two inspectors going after the chief who looked like she was headed for a meeting.

"It'll be the largest protest going on..." He was saying. "It's scheduled for a few days from now so shouldn't we have more people in the riot squad and have more water bombs prepared?"

"These protests are really getting on your nerves, aren't they?I mean it's not that vampires will turn themselves in." The other inspector said.

"That bastard must have eavesdropped on my briefing." Kaiwan swore and Victor turned to him.

"What happened?"

"There's gonna be a protest at the Grand Plaza two days from now. Darn, I suddenly lost my craving for a smoke on seeing that jerk." He hissed and tossed the cigarette into the nearest trash can.

"It'll turn out violent so we need to come out strong... Chief."The first inspector said and the chief turned to face them.

"Right now, people are feeling uneasy about the vampires cases. can we threaten them in such a situation? Not only that, it is our duty to make the people safe and secure. We need to strive for public peace and prioritize the needs of the people. I will not allow a citizen to get hurt... Dismissed." She said and turned to leave as the men salutes.

"I'll go inside now." Victor said

"Mm." He replied, his eyes not leaving here until she turned to wave at him.

Why was he getting the ugly feeling that a bloodbath would start soon?

There was a knock on the door as he looked over his investigation board that night.

"Come in."

The door opened and Zuriña walked in bearing a tray which contained a glass of juice.

"You brought this for me?" He asked as she lowered the tray to the table.

"Yeah."

"You shouldn't have bothered."He said as he reached for the glass.

"It's the least I could do." She replied and turned to look at the board. "This is..."

"There are now five angels of death left after Lucian's death. Those bastards are all over this place, so it's time to slowly start dealing with them."

"No, I feel doing that will take too long. Those bastards will not sit still after what I did to Lucian. We'll need to move quickly to ensure the safety of my siblings." She said and he shook his head.

"We can't rush into things. Recently as I was working alone, my investigation has been blocked by an unknown source. My support has backed out and I'm having a hard time obtaining information. That's why we need to move meticulously when dealing with them."

"Okay. So that's why you did this at home." She said, referring to the investigation board in his office and he turned to look at it.

"Mm. Since I don't trust anyone."

He rose, sipping his juice and slowly strode over to the board.

"There's one thing that shouldn't be where it is."

"Don't tell me...They're in the station too?"She asked, completely surprised.

"Let's start with getting the one close to us." He replied as he lowered his glass.
