Silence ruled the room.
Jeff stood frozen, the empty cup slipping from his fingers as it clattered softly against the floor.
Nothing happened at least... not immediately, lucien was there thinking of what semi awakners were, pondering over new informations received from the system while several guards exchanged uneasy glances.
"So... was that it?" someone whispered. But his whisper was like a sign. Like the beginning of the change.
Jeff’s body stiffened as he instantly lost all control of his limbs. His eyes quickly changed as he felt a devastating heat building up from them.
His spine snapped straight as if an invisible hand had grabbed him by the neck .
"Ghh—!"
A hoarse sound tore from his throat as the heat overloaded him, intense pain made him also go insane.
Before anyone could react, Jeff dropped to one knee, then both his knee smashing.hard onto the ground but weirdly it didn’t bleed.
Veins bulged violently along his arms and neck, dark blue lines crawling beneath his skin like living snakes . His views twisting, His muscles began to swell, compress, and twist unnaturally, as though his body was being reforged from the inside and yes it was being reforged, broken and then reformed into something more..
Struggling to surpass the limit of humans. Break, cell collapsing, DNA reforming..
Crack—!
A sharp sound echoed.
Jeff screamed.
"Aaaargh—!"
His scream wasn’t one of pain alone.
It was terror.
Bones shifted. Joints realigned. Muscles spasmed in violent waves, contracting and expanding far beyond human limits. The floor beneath him cracked slightly as his fingers dug into the concrete, his body growing bloated as intense energy destroyed his body.
Several guards instinctively stepped back.
"Boss—!" someone shouted.
" leader "...., another added.
Lucien didn’t move. His eyes were calm, focused . He temporarily withdrew from his thoughts as he watched Jeff transformation. It was not just any transformation but a moment of discovery. Of seeing the materials of the aftermath of the apocalypse could do. It gave not only lucien but the onlookers a chance to breathe. A chance to question all their beliefs and a chance to fully realize this world needs exploration.
The world they once knew had now turn to something they once knew.
"Hold him down if he loses control," Lucien ordered flatly. "But don’t interrupt the process."
That sentence alone sent a chill through the room.
This was supposed to make them stronger right ? This was supposed to be transformation that could saved them from the growing power of the zombies but why did it look like Jeff was being torn apart?
Jeff’s scream reached its peak and then abruptly cut off. His entire body froze.
For three long seconds, nothing happened. Just silence , eyes filled with fear and curiosity.
Then...
Boom.
A shockwave of pressure burst outward as intense wind spread around , compressed strong and fast. It was not visible, not loud yet It’s presence was proof of it’s existence.
But every guard in the room felt it slam into their chests like a heavy fist, their wind pipes tightened as they felt breathless. For that moment oxygen was short in their lungs as they all collapsed.
Jeff inhaled sharply and collapsed forward, panting heavily. Every breath was rough, harsh and filled with intense pain as he felt his head was light headed.
Steam rose faintly from his skin as finally the blue veins receded, his once snake like viens that double in size went back to normal.
His muscles... were bigger not bloated, not grotesque, Just denser, Sharper. Refined. This was a testament, a tangible result from the hell he went room it was also the proof of his survival. Finally the result of a human passing the limit of humanity.
Slowly, Jeff pushed himself up, his skin, his face his looks. Everything look just as it was earlier except for the sweat that made his clothes stick to him. Everything still seem normal but they knew jeff changed .
The room held its breath as Jeff finally made a move and clenched his fist.
Crack.
The sound didn’t come from his hand.It came from the air.
"...What the hell," Jeff muttered.
" how strong am I? What the fuck. Did I just produce sound by crushing air, how strong am I really?"..., Jeff thought .
After just surviving the transformation process. Jeff felt his body was alienating to him. Like just a child that suddenly gained an adult body. He was uncoordinated. Basics movement were still possible but control of strength was gone. Like he was applying his full strength on just clenching his fists..but still , he took a step forward, then another.
Each step left faint imprints on the concrete floor shocking the onlookers. Daemon and lucien being the most impressed about it. Daemon mind was racing with thoughts of the future , expansion to city level finally which lucien was with thoughts about how great the system was and moe things he could buy later on. He won’t just build a city, but a kingdom.
Jeff raised his head, eyes wide not with fear, but disbelief.
"I... I feel light," he said slowly. "No.., strong. Too strong."
Daemon stared at him in shock and amazement. That wasn’t his imagination Jeff truly had changed. His presence was more.. dense, stronger..
He no longer felt like an ordinary man, he had a natural pressure like those that had been in power for years. The same way humans fold at the present of a powerful man because of the pressure he radiated is the same way Jeff is now. Any normal human facing him will feel intense fear. Will choose their words and be more cautious around him.
Lucien exhaled quietly as the system window flickered before his eyes confirming the successful transformation.
[Semi-Awakener confirmed.]
Lucien smiled as he said.. "It worked."
The room exploded into exclamation and gasps of surprise.
"What?!"
"He survived?!"
"That actually worked?!"
"Boss, what was that?!"
" boss you are a god".., various questions were thrown out by the guards but most were filled with shock and disbelief but more so, their earlier fears instantly transformed into burning desire.
Lucien raised a hand as silence fell immediately. If lucien had just been a good leader in their eyes before. Now he was more, he was not just any leader but one that could change their lives, that could give them power and all he requested for was their loyalty. Nothing more.
"One by one," Lucien said calmly. "No rushing. No hesitation. You drink, you endure, and you rise." lucien said with a faint smile
"But understand this,if your will breaks halfway, I won’t be able to save you, death is the only result of that".., lucien added as the sentence sobered everyone instantly.
Still...
No one stepped back.
The second guard moved forward.
Then the third.
Then the fourth.
Cups were filled, gulps were head as they drank the blue liquid in turn.
One by one, they drank...
And one by one, hell followed.
Bodies collapsed.
Screams echoed.
Some convulsed violently, slamming into the floor as muscles spasmed uncontrollably. Others bit down so hard their teeth cracked, blood spilling from their mouths as they refused to scream.
The room turned into a battlefield without enemies.
Lucien watched it all.
Every successful transformation sent a faint pulse through the territory itself.
Every scream... forged loyalty.
After the fifth transformation, the guards stopped screaming.
After the tenth, they understood.
Pain wasn’t the enemy.
Fear was.
By the twentieth, guards began enduring silently, eyes burning with stubborn resolve.
By the fiftieth
They welcomed it.
Bodies rose stronger.
Heavier.
Faster.
Men and women who once struggled against zombies now crushed concrete unconsciously under their feet.
Breathing stabilized.
Postures straightened.
Eyes sharpened.
This was no longer a group of ordinary survivors.
This was a force.
Finally
The last guard drank.
The room fell silent once more.
Ninety-three guards.
Ninety-three survivors.
Ninety-three... Semi-Awakeners.
Lucien’s system updated quietly.
The shelter itself seemed to breathe.
Lucien stepped forward.
"You’ve crossed the threshold," he said. "You’re no longer prey. You’re no longer disposable."
He paused.
"But don’t mistake this for mercy."
His gaze swept across them like a blade.
"You belong to this shelter now. You fight for it. You expand it. You die for it if necessary."
No one hesitated.
Every guard dropped to one knee.
Not because they were ordered to.
Because they wanted to.
"From this moment," Jeff said, his voice firm, powerful, "we follow you."
Lucien turned.
"Daemon."
"Yes, boss."
"Prepare the expansion teams," Lucien said. "We start tonight."
Daemon’s eyes widened slightly.
"...Tonight?"
Lucien smiled.
"The city has been empty for far too long."
---
That night, the shelter moved.
Steel doors opened.
Barricades were dismantled.
Paths once deemed too dangerous were cleared within minutes.
Zombies that once required squads to handle were crushed by single guards.
Necks snapped.
Skulls shattered.
The streets trembled under human footsteps again.
Territory boundaries expanded block by block.
Buildings were reclaimed.
Resources were seized.
Lights flickered back on in distant structures.
From above, Lucien watched the city slowly bend.
His system pulsed again.
[Territory Expansion in Progress.]
For the first time since the apocalypse
Humanity didn’t retreat.
It advanced.
