Chapter 17: Confession Time

After the exhausting hours of flying, Bella's heart swelled as she stepped through the familiar front door of her family's grandiose mansion. Lupe, the family's long-time housekeeper and the closest thing to a mother figure she'd ever had, greeted her with a genuine, affectionate smile. Bella had missed Lupe dearly.

"Lupe, it's so good to see you again," Bella said, embracing the older woman.

"Oh, mi niña," Lupe replied, hugging Bella tightly. "You've grown so much. We've all missed you."

As Bella pulled away from the hug, she asked, "Where are my parents? I thought they'd be around."

Lupe's expression soured slightly. "Your father is still at the office. He said he would be home late again tonight. And your mother, well... you know how she is. She's away running some errands or on another shopping spree or spa, as usual."

Bella sighed, feeling a mix of disappointment and familiarity. Her parents' perpetual absence was something she had grown used to. In a way, it was what had driven her to be more independent and self-reliant. But, returning home for the holidays, she had hoped for a different kind of welcome.

"I see," Bella said, trying to hide her disappointment. "Well, at least I have you, Lupe. And that's what really matters."

Lupe smiled warmly at her. "That's right, mi niña. You've always been a bright light in this house, and we're all happy to have you home. Now, tell me everything. How's college? How are your studies? Do you have any plans for the holiday season? Any boy you like?"

As they settled into the comfortable living room, Bella began to share her stories with Lupe. She knew that, despite her parents' absences, Lupe had always been there for her, it was a reminder that she still had a person who made her truly loved and appreciated.

After a short nap to shake off the fatigue from her travels and a refreshing shower, Bella descended the grand staircase and made her way to the dining room. She was dressed nicely, hoping for a pleasant reunion with her parents.

As she entered the room, her father, Richard, and her mother, Isabella, were already seated at the opulent dining table. The atmosphere was a bit subdued, and their expressions shifted from puzzlement to realization as they saw Bella.

"Is that really you, Bella?" her mother asked, her voice betraying her surprise.

Bella smiled warmly, trying to suppress any feelings of disappointment from their initial reaction. "Yes, it's me, Mother. I'm back for the holidays."

Her father, Richard, cleared his throat, quickly recovering from his initial confusion. "Of course, dear. We've been so busy lately; it slipped our minds that you'd be home."

"Busy, as usual," Bella's mother added with a hint of annoyance. "You know how it is, darling."

"Yes, Mother, I do," Bella replied, her voice betraying a touch of irony.

The dinner continued with polite conversation, mostly led by Bella as she shared her experiences at college and her upcoming plans for the holidays. Her parents listened with a detached interest, nodding at the right moments.

Bella had hoped for a warm and welcoming reunion, but it seemed that her parents' work and social engagements took precedence as usual. Her heart ached at the realization that nothing had changed, and she was still a mere afterthought in their lives. She hoped that maybe her temporary absence from their lives would ignite some deep buried parental feelings, but her hopes were in vain.

As the evening wore on, Bella decided to focus on the week ahead, spending time with Lupe, visiting Lilly, and preparing for the infamous Christmas party.

The next day, Bella's phone rang, and the caller ID displayed Lily's name. She picked up the call with an excited tone in her voice. "Hey, Lily! Ready for some shopping?"

Lily's voice held a note of surprise. "Wow, Bella, you sound way more enthusiastic about shopping than usual. I thought you weren't a fan."

Bella chuckled. "You're right, I usually find it a bit tedious, you know that I actually never enjoyed it. But today, it's different. I've got a special reason to look my best."

Lily's curiosity was piqued. "Oh? What's the occasion?"

"The Christmas party my parents host every year," Bella explained. "As we talked before, I've decided it's time to confess my feelings to Reid. I want to look my absolute best, Lily, and make a lasting impression."

Lily's voice sparkled with excitement. "Bella, that's amazing! I'm so proud of you. Let's make sure you get the perfect outfit. We're going to rock that Christmas party!"

As Bella and Lily made their way through the bustling mall, Bella's thoughts were consumed by her upcoming revelation to Reid. She hoped that the enchanting ambience of the Christmas party would set the stage for her confession. The holiday decorations, the sparkling lights, and the romantic atmosphere of the season seemed like the perfect backdrop for baring her heart.

At the first store they entered, Bella gravitated toward a rack of elegant dresses. Lily's eyes widened with approval as she scanned the selection. "What do you think, Bella? Something classic or something daring?"

Bella held a burgundy dress against her and looked at herself in the mirror. It had a vintage elegance with intricate lace and a flowing skirt. "I'm leaning towards classic," she mused. "I want to be memorable but not overly flashy. I want Reid to see the real me."

Lily nodded in agreement. "Great choice! The classical is timeless and sophisticated, just like you. But let's keep our options open. You never know when you might find the perfect dress."

They spent hours exploring the mall, trying on a variety of dresses, from sleek and modern to traditional and elegant. The search for the ideal outfit was an adventure in itself, and Bella began to enjoy the process more than she ever expected. It was as if the journey through the stores was a metaphor for her pursuit of Reid.

At the end of the day, Bella had a few promising dress options in hand, and the enthusiasm to face her feelings was stronger than ever. In the end, she decided on the burgundy classic dress she checked first time. She was ready to shine at the Christmas party, not just with a beautiful dress but with a heart full of hope and love.

The day of the Christmas party had finally arrived, and Bella was a bundle of nerves. She had spent the entire day preparing for the evening: a long bath, carefully applying makeup, and selecting the perfect dress she'd found during the shopping spree with Lily. As she looked at herself in the mirror, she took a deep breath, attempting to calm the racing thoughts that had been spiralling in her head.

She couldn't help but run through countless scenarios and possible outcomes regarding her confession to Reid. Her mind churned from one extreme to the other, each scenario more dramatic than the last. She imagined the best-case scenario: Reid smiling warmly, admitting he had feelings for her, and they shared a magical first kiss. Then she pictured the worst-case scenario: Reid responding with cold indifference or harsh rejection, and her evening turning into a nightmare.

Bella was well aware of the risks of confessing her feelings to her father's best friend. The age gap was undeniable, and the likelihood of him seeing her as more than a friend's daughter seemed slim. Still, her heart ached with longing, and she couldn't bear to keep her feelings a secret any longer. As she took a deep breath and steadied herself, she decided that regardless of the outcome, she had to be honest with her emotions.

The party's atmosphere was filled with festive cheer, the grand halls of her family's home adorned with twinkling lights, wreaths, and the scent of fresh pine. Guests milled about, enjoying the holiday season. Bella watched the clock nervously as the hours passed, bringing her closer to the moment she would reveal her feelings.

She tried to keep herself distracted by engaging in conversations with friends, dancing to the holiday music, and sipping on a glass of sparkling cider. Yet, she couldn't help but glance around the room, searching for Reid's familiar face. Her heart raced with anticipation and anxiety, wondering how he would react to her confession.

The evening wore on, and Bella knew the moment was approaching. She couldn't postpone it any longer. It was now or never. As the party reached its peak, she spotted Reid in the crowd. She actually noticed him a few times earlier, but each time he was surrounded by different business persons or by sophisticated ladies trying to get his attention. He looked dashing in his suit, and she knew it was time to face her feelings and do something about it.

Taking a deep breath, she made her way through the festive crowd, feeling a mix of excitement, fear, and hope. The journey of countless scenarios in her mind was over, and the moment of truth was here; as she gathered all her courage and walked up to Reid, with her heart pounding.

Bella greeted Reid with a warm smile, though there was a moment of pause before he returned the greeting. As he met her gaze, her heart skipped a beat, and for a second, she felt herself getting lost in the depths of his eyes. With a glass of whisky in his hand, he looked slightly more relaxed than his usual self, despite his cold exterior. At that moment, flashes of memories with his face full of passionate abandon came flooding into her mind, sending chills down her spine.

They engaged in small talk, discussing the party, the festive decorations, her studies, and general pleasantries. Bella was nervous but tried to maintain her composure. She knew this was her chance.

As the evening progressed, Bella finally mustered the courage to broach the topic. She looked into Reid's eyes and said, "Reid, there's something I've been wanting to talk to you about. It's important, and I'd really appreciate it if we could have a private conversation for a few minutes. Do you have some time?"

After she finished her sentence, she waited with her heart beating strongly; before the party she wrote down and repeated the same sentence multiple times like a script, to avoid mumbling and embarrassing herself.

Reid's expression turned slightly puzzled, but after a moment's contemplation, he agreed, "Of course, Bella. Let's find somewhere to talk."

With that, they made their way to one of the guest rooms, finding a quiet setting away from the bustling party. Bella's heart raced as she knew this was her moment, the moment when she'd reveal her feelings to the man she'd been secretly pining for.
