SSS Rank Talent: I can Copy Monsters Ability Chapter 26

Zhang Wei bought him twenty-two seconds.

Yuan counted them from his position against the cavern wall, back pressed flat, watching his MP tick upward at the Intelligence-thirteen recovery rate while Zhang Wei kept the Crystal Guardian’s attention through a combination of lateral movement and the specific talent for making himself an irritating target that Yuan had been observing all evening and had significantly undervalued.

The Core Warden was the immediate problem.

It had followed Yuan to the wall and was standing three meters away with the patient, custodial attention of something that had infinite time and no competing priorities. It wasn’t attacking. It was containing, keeping him away from the core, which was its assigned function, which it was performing correctly.

Yuan looked at it and thought about thirty seconds of sustained MP recovery and whether that would be enough for what came next.

Then Zhang Wei ran out of options and the Guardian’s Mana Pulse fired and Yuan stopped thinking about timelines.

The pulse was a compressed sphere of crystallized mana, roughly the diameter of a cartwheel, and it covered the distance between the Guardian and Zhang Wei in the time it took Yuan to register it had been launched. Zhang Wei dropped flat, good instinct, the pulse traveling in a horizontal plane, and it missed him by forty centimeters and hit the cavern wall in the section directly to Yuan’s left.

The concussive force from the wall impact was not forty centimeters away.

Enhanced Stony Skin distributed it. Sonic Absorption engaged on the frequency component, Mana Pulses apparently shared enough acoustic structure with sonic attacks for the skill to recognize the input, and converted the harmonic content to four points of MP. Yuan’s shoulder hit the wall harder than he’d planned and he used the contact to push off immediately, converting the impact into lateral movement rather than standing in the aftermath.

His MP was at twenty-three.

The Guardian was recalibrating for its next target selection, the Mana Pulse had missed and its Core Link was drawing fresh mana for the follow-up, the luminous thread True Sight showed him pulsing with the intake.

The Core Link was fully extended in the intake posture. Maximally connected. Maximally vulnerable to disruption at the connection point.

Yuan activated Shadow Step.

He came out behind the Guardian with his remaining MP at thirteen and both hands forward, True Sight showing him the Crystal Armor’s composition, the faceted outer layer, the mana channels running beneath it in the same spiral pattern as the Core Crystal Golem but denser, and underneath those, the Core Link’s anchor point at the center of the chest, the place where the Guardian’s individual structure interfaced with the dungeon’s mana infrastructure.

Focused blunt force, the weakness notification had said.

He hit the anchor point with everything his Strength-thirteen and the Shadow Step’s arrival momentum could combine into a single strike.

The Crystal Armor cracked from the inside.

The strike had transferred through the surface layer to the anchor point, the force concentrating at the interface between the Guardian’s structure and the Core Link’s attachment, and the crack propagated outward from that internal point. The Core Link severed. The Guardian’s mana supply cut off from the dungeon core abruptly, the luminous thread going dark in True Sight, and the creature’s output dropped from B-rank to whatever it could sustain on its individual reserves.

Which was, it turned out, not much.

The crystal form destabilized from the chest outward, the spiral channel structure losing the Core mana that had been maintaining its coherence, and Yuan pressed both palms flat against the cracking surface and let his talent do the rest.

The extraction came through the Guardian’s disintegration rather than before it, his talent apparently unbothered by the sequence, finding the core within the collapsing structure and pulling it clear before the form fully resolved into fragments. A B-rank core, densely structured, and alongside it something that the system flagged separately before he’d finished standing upright.

[Bonus Extraction Detected.]

[Item Acquired: Crystal Shard (B-Rank)]

[Note: High-purity mana crystal fragment. Properties: Mana conduction, structural reinforcement.]

He looked at the Crystal Shard that had materialized in his inventory notification. Not an ability, a physical object, the first time a bonus extraction had produced something tangible rather than a dormant skill. He filed the implication and opened the status window.

He allocated three points to Intelligence immediately, Mana Channeling’s efficiency scaling made it the obvious choice and held the remaining two. His Intelligence hit sixteen, the MP pool ceiling rising with it, recovery rate climbing. He could feel the difference in his mana cycling almost immediately, the channels running smoother, the ambient mana his body was processing converting more efficiently.

He closed the window.

The Core Warden had retreated.

t was ten meters back rather than three, still between him and the core, still watching. But its posture had changed again, the alert geometry softening slightly. He didn’t know if it was responding to the Guardian’s defeat or to something it was sensing from the core, or both.

Zhang Wei was getting up from the floor, moving carefully, checking his own inventory of damage. Bruised, depleted, operating on the far side of his actual capacity, all of that was visible in how he was moving. Still functional. Yuan counted that as a category of miracle.

"The Channeling ability," Yuan said. "It’s what we needed."

Zhang Wei straightened up. "To stabilize the core."

"Mana Weaving repairs mana structures, I used it on the core for twelve percent before I ran empty. Mana Channeling controls and infuses mana precisely, efficiency scaling with Intelligence." He paused. "Together they should be sufficient for full repair if my MP holds."

"Should be."

"Working theory."

Zhang Wei looked at the Core Warden, which was looking at Yuan. "And the guardian?"

"It’s not attacking."

"It was very much attacking thirty seconds ago."

"The Guardian’s gone. The core’s threat assessment may have shifted." Yuan kept his eyes on the Warden’s posture, True Sight reading its mana signature continuously. The custodial quality was still present, the fundamental assignment unchanged, but there was something else in the signature now, a new input it was processing. "Or it’s waiting to see what I do next."

He took a step toward the core.

The Warden didn’t move.

Another step.

Still nothing.

He crossed the seven remaining meters to the stone formation and stood in front of the dungeon core with the Core Warden two meters behind him and True Sight rendering the full internal damage map in luminous detail and his MP at twenty-one and climbing.

The core’s fracture network was extensive. The Blight contamination had propagated through sixty percent of the internal structure, the corruption widening the fracture lines continuously, the slow deterioration that had been running for months now running significantly faster under the accelerated conditions the anomaly had created.

He needed to seal the primary fracture first, the original entry point, the diagonal crack visible on the surface. If he could close that, the contamination would stop propagating even if the existing corruption remained. The existing corruption he could address with Cauterizing Flame applied through Mana Channeling, burning it out of the internal structure the same way he’d burned it off the evolved Gargoyle King’s hide.

He ran the sequence in his head. Mana Channeling to direct his mana into the fracture network. Mana Weaving to repair the structural damage. Cauterizing Flame threaded through Mana Channeling to purify the contamination in the sealed sections. Repeat until the system registered full stabilization.

Variable MP cost. His pool was at twenty-four and rising. He needed it higher.

He waited.

At thirty-one he decided it was enough and raised his hand toward the core’s primary fracture.

The core pulsed.

Harder than any previous pulse — a single beat that the Tremor Sense received as a physical impact through his feet, the crystal formations in the cavern vibrating at their bases, two of the smaller ones shedding fragments that fell in slow arcs through the blue-white light. The fracture network flared dark through True Sight, the Blight contamination surging outward from the primary crack in a wave that traveled through the internal structure and back in under a second.

The core pulsed again. Then again. The rhythm accelerating, each beat harder than the last, the fracture widening visibly between pulses.

[Ding!]

[Warning: Dungeon Core destabilization accelerating.]

[Estimated time to critical failure: 4 minutes.]

[Initiating final collapse sequence.].
