Chapter Evidence

The morning light enters the room and I groan slightly before opening my eyes, and I'm blinded by the bright sunlight. I turned my head to the other direction.

What time is it? I turned towards the couch, which is empty now. As if he could read my mind, Damon entered the room. His hair was a mess, and there were dark circles around his eyes.

He was clutching his head as if in pain and I tried to control my smile at the sight of him. He raised his head and his eyes met mine. He dropped his hand.

"Good morning."

"Good morning." I replied, still smiling. Damon tends to always be like this whenever he gets drunk. It was kind of cute but I would never let anybody know that.

"Good sleep?” He asked, trying to strike a conversation. I nodded in affirmation even though I didn't have a good sleep.

Last night I was tossing and turning around. I couldn't sleep properly because of the words Damon had said. They were running in my mind continuously and I couldn't take them out of my head.

All the things he said got to me and I didn't exactly know what to do. I had thought, and thought about it and eventually I had drifted to sleep.

"Lucia?" Damon called, pulling me out of my thoughts. "Are you okay, do you need something?" I hear the worry in his voice.

"I'm fine." I replied.

“Are you sure?” He asked again, the worry still evident in his eyes and on his face. Before I could respond, the door opened and the doctor, Mr. Drax entered.

"Hello, Miss. Stones." He smiled at me.

“Hello, Mr. Drax." I reply, returning his smile.

"I'm gonna do a quick check up.” He told me and started to check my vitals, blood pressure and all. I glance at Damon and see him scowling at Mr. Drax.

I giggled and his eyes turned towards me and his tensed shoulders relaxed.

"Everything is perfectly alright." Mr. Drax interrupts us. "You are good to go." He smiled at me. “But if you feel any pain in your head or you keep feeling dizzy, make sure to come back to the hospital immediately, okay?" He warned and I nodded happily. I can't wait to go home.

He turned to Damon and gave him a farewell nod which Damon returned. "Take care." He said and left the room.

One hour later, Damon and I were on the way to my house and I was so excited. Neither of us said anything to each other. A radio channel was playing one of my favorite songs, 'One call away' by Charlie Puth, so I quietly hummed along to the lyrics.

When we reached the house, Damon parked the car In front of the house and Paul hurried towards us.

“Welcome back, ma'am." He said.

"Thank you." I answered warmly.

Damon helped me out of the car. His one arm wrapped around my waist and the other one held my arm. I ignored the tiny tingles that passed through my body and let him lead me to the house.

"Lucia!" Juliette wrapped her arms around me as soon as I entered the house. "Welcome back, honey." She wipes her tears and I give her a polite smile. Starvos also hugs me and kisses my head before releasing me.

"I'm gonna take her to her room." Damon announced and held his hand out to me. I placed my hand in his' surprising both him and myself. He tried to ignore it as he led me upstairs. Where are the kids? I miss them.

"The kids went to school.” He told me, reading my thoughts. I nodded at him and he opened the door to my room, and helped me sit on the bed and placed a few pillows behind me, for support. "Do you need anything?” He asked, sitting next to my legs.

"No. Thanks." I felt nervous at his closeness. The atmosphere turned awkward and I looked away from him.

"You should get some rest, you look um… tired.” I finally spoke up after a few beats of unwavering silence. I looked at him and I could see a smug smile playing at the corner of his lips.

“Okay.” He gets up from the bed, walks towards my table and pulls out the fault in our star's book and hands it to me. I hesitated before collecting it from him and stared up at him, confused. He walked to the other side of the bed, removed his shoes and socks and flops onto the bed.

"What are you doing?" I demanded, my eyes widening. Why was he sleeping here?

"You suggested I take a rest." He smirked at me, and I narrowed my eyes at him when I understood what he was trying to do.

“Not here. Go to your room." I tried pushing him away. A smile crept up on my lips.

"No." He laughed. But I remained quiet. I opened the book he had given me, I wanted to read it. I've already read it about ten times already, but I still loved to read it.

"You said we'd talk when I am sober.” He interrupted after a few minutes. I could feel his eyes on me and I turned my gaze towards him.

"Shall we?" He asked and I found myself nodding. He sat up on the bed and crossed his legs. I closed the book and placed it on the nightstand.

"I'm sorry for everything that happened between us, Lucia." He started. "I regret it and I wish I could take it back. I know you can't forget what I did to us, I can't either, but I want you to give me a chance to fix it.”

"I-" He stops me.

"Please, let me finish." He cuts me off gently. "I regret everything I've done, but I promise I didn't sleep with Celine that night. I was too hurt to do anything. I admit that later on I slept with a lot of other women..." He let the word trail, turning to look at me. I cringed at his words but tried to hide it as he looked at me. "But I regret doing that. I just did those things to get over you, get over whatever happened. I just wanted to forget you, but I couldn't. I could never forget you or get over you. You are everything to me, Lucia."

"Even though we were apart all these years, you still mean everything to me. I regret missing four years of our children's life and I am sorry. I don't know what else to say but sorry. I just want you to give me a chance so that I can make it up to you and the kids." He dragged in sharp air through his mouth. And I realized that tears were streaming down my cheeks as my eyes burned. "Please, Lucy!" He tried to cajole when I didn't give him a reply. I sigh deeply before speaking.

"Damon... I know you regret what you've done. I can see it in your eyes." He smiled slightly at my words. "But I don't know if I can give you another chance. I don't know if I can trust you, again. You always had this problem, Damon. You could never control your jealousy and you let the fake pictures get to you." I sighed. "I forgive you, but I don't think I can give you another chance.” My heart breaks as I say those words. They were the exact words I wanted to say, so why does it hurt?

"I know, we can take things slowly. We can start with a few dates and we'll take things from there, gradually, you get to know me again. I know you need some time to heal and I will give you that. As long as I know you are safe. We'll take this slow. Okay?" He asked and before I could stop myself I nodded in agreement. His face lit up at once and he smiled widely. I find myself smiling back and after so many years, I had this feeling of completeness and I could only hope I wasn't making the wrong decision.
