I froze to hear that, but I pushed Constantine’s chest hard. I moved backward and shielded myself with the pillow. “It’s not a good way to win my heart. If you want me to be your wife, treat me well, not force me against my will.”
Constantine stared at me and stroked his chin. “Oh, so, you want an old way of courtship. Fine, I can do that, princess.” He grinned. “But we can save time by going straight to the main course.”
“No, thanks.”
“Not even if I tell you something you may find interesting?”
“About my parents? You have told me you would share about it. So, it’s not something you can use as a bargaining reward.”
Constantine laughed out loud. “You are intriguing my interest. I like you.”
I tilted my head. “I’m still curious until now. Why do you want me from the beginning?”
“To answer it, I should tell you about your parents and yourself.”
“But is your information true?”
“Why should I lie to you?”
I shrugged. “You are the most cunning person I’ve ever met. So, who knows if you want to use it to your advantage?”
“I may use it for myself, but I think you have the right to know your roots.” Constantine smiled, making him more like Ethan. It squeezed my heart since I wished Ethan were here. “You can decide later if what I will share with you is the truth or not.”
I nodded. “Please tell me.”
“I will share what my people told me.” Then Constantine sat on the bed. “The story started when the vampire kingdom found out about Mia Starr, your mother. Some people said it started earlier. It was when you were born.”
I hugged the pillow, laid my head on the wall, and listened to Constantine’s story.
“There was a red light in the sky. As supernatural creatures, we believe in signs. So werewolves’ elders investigated it, and so did the vampires. Then they all found out that it was a magic power released by a witch. It was a tremendous power as it could reach the sky.”
“Why did werewolves and vampires investigate such a thing?”
“Since we are superstitious. Unusual signs in the sky may be ominous. So, they wanted to find out before it was too late. It was a way to prepare for the worst.”
I nodded. “Please continue.”
“After a check, they were positive that the sign wasn’t a natural one. So, both werewolves and vampires shifted to another question. Who or what might create it?” He looked at me. “Yes, they found out about your mother later. She might endure so much pain to give birth to you, so instinctively, she might release her power.”
“So, it was unintended?”
“Yes, many said so. Mia’s magic power created an unusual sign in the sky, but she also instilled her power within you.”
I shook my head. “It can’t be.”
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t have any magic power.” Then I sighed. “I only know that I’m a witch’s daughter today from my mom and you.”
Constantine stroked his chin. “Let me continue my story first. Next, we can discuss it further.”
“Okay, please continue.”
“So, starting from there, the hunt to find and catch your mother was started. We, werewolves, approached your mother in peace. We offered her position as the witch’s head in our kingdom and money, but she refused it.” Since I gaped, he asked, “What?”
“Werewolves have witches too?”
“Yes, we do. From where do you think Ethan learned his skill to teleport?”
I frowned a little. “So, if you all have already had the witches, why did you need my mother?”
Constantine smiled. “You still don’t get it. We need witches to secure our position. If we have many strong witches on our side, we will be invincible.”
“I see.” I nodded. “Then what happened? Why did people kill my father and burn my mother to death?”
“To get there, I should first explain werewolves and vampires’ nature. We compete for dominance. So, it is natural when we discover new potential power. We wanted so badly to get it.”
“But then, if you all wanted my mother’s power, why did the people kill her?”
“It started with a vampire’s prince. He fell in love with your mother and persuaded her to leave your father.”
“What?!”
Constantine grinned. “From what people describe it to me, Mia looked like yourself, blonde, blue eyes. Since you are beautiful, I believe Mia was stunning.”
I took a deep breath. I wish I could see my mother.
“Can I continue my story?”
I nodded. “Yes, please.”
“So, when the vampire prince went too far, your mother killed him.”
“What do you mean by going too far?”
“He tried to assault her since she kept refusing him.”
I shook my head. “No! It’s horrible.”
“It is more to do with instinct, my darling. As supernatural creatures, we are lustful. So, if our passions are sparked, we will try all we can to get the women we want.”
“So do you.”
“Yes, I admit. The most natural approach for me to women is by inviting them to my bed.”
“Including Victoria.”
“Victoria is different. We met and felt a connection. I offered her as my mistress, and she accepted it.” He smiled.” So, it is all simple and practical with her.”
“Do you love her?”
Constantine grinned. “Will it bother you if I say yes?”
“No, but if you love her, release me and marry her.”
“Not so fast. I want you for many reasons now. But before we discuss those, I will continue my story about Mia.”
I nodded. “Yes, please.”
“So, the vampires were mad because of their prince’s death. They started ambushing your mother a few times. However, your mother was truly amazing. She could kill them all!”
“But then, why should she escape? Why did she let them kill my father?”
“Your father was your mother’s weak point. He was a nobleman too, but human. When the vampires attacked again, your mother tried to fight them and protect your father and you simultaneously. As they learned your mother’s weakness, they found out how to defeat her. They attacked your father instead.”
I closed my mouth with my hand and shook my head. Tears flew to my cheeks.
“After so many times trying, they could hit your mother when she lost focus. They killed your father in an instant and hurt your mother. In a weak condition, your mother ran away, carrying you with her.”
