Chapter 42

I was in good spirits and ready to return to work after spending the entire Sunday cuddling with Richard, among other things.

It has been a hassle trying to get Richard to let me resume work. If he had had his way, I wouldn't even lift my fingers to do anything; I would just be sleeping and eating. But I pleaded with him, after confirming that I wouldn't be doing any stressful work.

I really don't do anything at the hospital, because if I even dare lift something, about three interns will be right beside me, helping me to do it. The pack was very happy after we announced that we were expecting a child. They have also been extra protective of their unborn Alpha. And I am happy because my son will grow up in love with people who care about him.

It was a typical Monday, and Harry walked beside me as we went to work. It had become a routine; one I enjoy now. Harry had gradually become one of my close friends, one I could rely on, and I did look forward to our walks to work.

Richard had let me continue trekking to work after he had called Gamgam, and she attested that walking was a good exercise for me and the baby.

"Who is our little Alpha holding up? I hope he isn't giving you much trouble."

I smiled, as I have always done whenever I am asked about the growing child. "He is fine." I replied, rubbing my stomach. "His kicks are just getting stronger. I wonder if he is playing football in there."

Harry just smiled and said nothing, so we continued in silence. "Uhm... Harry?" I called out, unsure of how to approach this matter.

"Yes?"

"Can I ask a question?"

"Isn't that part of the question? But go on, ask away."

"Do you have a mate?" I finally threw the question open. That thought has been nagging me. It was unheard of that a male of Harry's age was yet to find his mate. I haven't seen any females around him except the ones that do cling to him.

The goddess just has a way of making sure you meet your mate at least before age 30. I haven't seen or heard of any females associated with him, and I have been curious, hence my question.

He was silent for a long time, and I was afraid I may have broached a difficult topic. Maybe he didn't hear me, or he didn't want to answer. "Not yet, I haven't found her." He replied with a clouded expression on his face.

"Sorry," I muttered under my breath.

"Don't be." We continued walking in silence, each one lost in their thoughts.

We finally got to the entrance of the school and said our goodbyes before I turned the opposite direction to the hospital.

I went inside, feeling relieved as the air vents did their job. The sun has been shinning down on us in all her glory. I made it to my station, changing into my scrubs.

Today wasn't a busy day. So, I spent the better part of my day with my feet on the table, with a bucket of crispy fried chicken and a jar of freshly squeezed oranges. Every day, Richard had food delivered to me.

Chicken has been my comfort food since the start of my pregnancy. And I welcomed the craving—at least it's better than craving pickles or wet sand. I was satisfied with my chicken and ate it in whatever form it took, cooked, fried, roasted, etc.

I heard the emergency alarm start blaring, and I hurriedly washed my hands before moving to the concerned ward.

A young wolf has been found at the border of our territory, and according to our laws, we don't harm children, so he was brought here. From the looks of it, it was an Omega that had been abused by his pack and sent away. His coat was dirty and matted, the color barely recognizable, with blood all over him.

He should be around 13–15 years old because we shift at 13. But he looked malnourished for his age. Even as a wolf, his ribs were sticking out. He was missing patches of fur here and there, and there were a lot of open wounds that hadn't been healed properly and broken bones.

I almost shed tears. We can be cruel to our kinds, especially omegas, and most of the time, if they are deemed useless, they will be left for dead or sold to another pack for a little price.

I was happy that our pack has never treated anyone like that, even Omegas. Everyone was treated with respect, regardless of your rank.

It was tedious, trying to resuscitate him and patch him up. But we did it. We had to shave some of his fur so as to properly treat him. After successfully patching him up, I washed my hands and retired back to my station.

It was finally closing hours, so I was on my way home. Harry had told me not to wait for him because he had extra practice today, so I was walking alone.

My earbuds were plugged into my ears and on, and I was blasting some hard raps when I was stopped on the way by a young intern, about my age or older. I have been seeing her around for quite some time now. She was a tall lady with huge watermelons for breasts, and they were threatening to spill out at any moment.

"Good day, Luna."

"Good day. "How are you doing?"

"I am fine." I tried to leave, but she quickly blocked my path, preventing me from doing so. I gave her a puzzled look, wondering why she did that.

"I am sorry, Luna. But Gamgam asked me to give you this." She spoke, stretching out her hands to reveal a white bag. I peeped inside cautiously, and there were different drugs in it.

She must have seen the confusion on my face because she explained, "They are prenatal vitamins. She forgot to give it to you today since we were busy. So, we asked me to deliver them to you.

"But I already have some back at home."

"Yes, but she said this one is for when you reach 10 weeks. There are different drugs for different stages of pregnancy."

"Alright." I took it and was about to go, but she stopped me again. I was beginning to get angry.

"I'm sorry, Luna, but she said you should take it now. It is to be taken every day at exactly 4 pm."

"Alright, when I get home, I will take it."

"I'm sorry, but I can't accept that. She told me to watch you take it. She had said, you will give this excuse in order not to take it. So, I am going to watch you swallow it."

I rolled my eyes at her. Gamgam! She definitely knows me. I hate drugs with a passion, and I often have to be forced before I take them.

"Alright, but how do I take them? I don't have a bottle of water here."

"Here, Luna." She produced a bottle of water from her bag. Gamgam has really planned this out right.

I took the drug and sniffed it, before throwing it in my mouth and washing it down with water. "Are you satisfied now?" I asked her. She nodded, and I smiled at her. She grinned, flashing her canines, and that rubbed at me in the wrong way.

I was wondering the reason for her strange reaction when it hit me. I lost my footing and staggered backwards, wanting to be as far away from this woman as possible.

My environment was getting blurry, and I struggled to find balance. "What have you done to me?" I thundered, but my voice was merely like a little kitten.

"What I should have done for a long time." She moved to grab me. I squatted her hands away, staggering back, attempting to invade her touch as she replied in a snare.

I have been drugged!

I tried to reach Richard through the mind link, trying desperately to send a message, but his mind was blocked and, in my weakened state, I couldn't break it. He always blocks his mind whenever he has an important meeting.

I tried to signal to Kiayra to contact Eli, but the drugs were also affecting her and she could barely function.

Whatever that drug was, it was very powerful because I could already feel myself becoming limp. My body is slowly shutting itself down.

I tried not to panic and controlled my breathing so that the drugs would not dissolve into my bloodstream quickly, but it was already too late. I could already feel the effects of the drugs taking place.

Whenever I envisioned my death, this was not how it played out in my head. I had thought I would be quite old, with my children all around me. Richard will be beside me, and we will be holding our hands as we take our last breath together.

But those were just dreams; this was reality. And in the real world, I was dying.

I closed my eyes as the effects of the drugs became too powerful, and I collapsed on the floor.
