Her phone buzzed and she pulled it out of her pockets, the screen flashed on and in the notification box on the lock screen, one message popped up. It was a message from Jeremy.
- We are still seeing tonight as planned, right? Just a reminder, please Donna. -
Donna sighed and rolled her eyes, she pressed the power button and the screen went dark, then she shoved the phone back into her pockets and shut her eyes.
Right, she was supposed to meet up with Jeremy tonight, she had already forgotten that she had agreed to that. She groaned, why had she agreed to that because he would not stop pestering her about it. And what was it that he wanted to say to her that he could not just tell her over the phone? Was it so important that they had to meet up in person?
No, she didn’t think so.
Her phone buzzed again and she pulled it out of her pockets, it was another message from Jeremy.
- I’m already here, I’ll wait for you to get here, window seat, you’ll see me even before you get inside. -
She knew he would not relent, so it was better to get this done right now and get it over with, she knew she was not going to agree to another meeting after this, she would make sure to tell him that, so whatever it was that he wanted to say, she would tell him to say everything at once, there was not going to be another meeting.
She groaned as she pushed herself up from the sofa and walked toward the door, her feet dragging on the floors.
“Are you heading out again, Donna?” her mother asked from the kitchen.
“Yes mum, there is somewhere I need to be right now. It’ll only be brief.” she said and slipped her feet into a pair of flip flops.
Betty turned to face her, worry etched on her face. “But, its dark out darling.”
Donna nodded, she knew that. “I know mum, I’ll be quick, plus it’s just around the corner.”
“Is it with Wayne?” her mother asked with a smile and a raised eye brow. “You know you two do look good together.” she winked.
Donna chuckled and blew her mother a kiss, then grabbed another coat and her car keys from the counter, yelling out goodbye to her mum before hurrying out the front door just so she would not have to answer her mother’s question. She could not tell her mother the actual reason she was heading out, or whom she was going to see, because as she walked to her car, she could not believe she had agreed to this meeting with him.
She got into the car and shut the door, then placed both hands on the steering while squeezing it tightly as she let out a long breath through her mouth. She took a couple of breaths as she tried to come up with what she would say to him, or how she should react. She should just probably call it off, but she knew he would only continue to pester her.
She pushed the start button of the car and adjusted the gears. “Let’s get this over with quickly, Jeremy.” she whispered to herself and moved the car out onto the road.
* * * * * *
Cheryl walked lightly on the roof of the house barefoot with a dangerous smile on her face, glad that she had decided this night to trail Donna to her house, or she would not have the information she had overheard from the conversation between Donna and her mother.
It was just as she had speculated, the girl was Jeremy’s child, and Jeremy knew not of her existence, maybe she had been wrong about Donna, she really didn’t want anything to do with Jeremy.
She sighed as she walked to the edge of the roof and stood still. This had to remain a secret, because if Jeremy ever found out that Donna had kept his child, then he would want her back, he would want them both back and then she would be kicked to the curb.
She knew she no longer had a great standing within the Xiu family, and the only reason she was still Jeremy’s wife was because of the relationship they had with her family, even her own father was ashamed of her.
There was no way of amending the relationship now, she knew that, and she knew she could bear it, she could bear everything, as long as it was her who had the Xiu name, as long as she was the Xiu’s only daughter-in-law. As long as she still had Jeremy as her husband, she would bear it all.
As she watched Donna leave the house and get into her car, she wondered if the old geezer, Ebeneezer Xiu, her father-in-law would accept Donna to be a daughter-in-law of the Xiu family just because she had given the family a child, something Cheryl would never be able to give them.
But then she doubted that, her father in law was a man who valued family bonds and blood ties, Donna’s child might be acknowledged by him as his grand child but that would only be because he desperately needed one, Donna would never be given the Xiu name as long as Ebeneezer still breathes.
That was because she was nothing like them, she was a human, a simple human, and…
She was riled out of her thoughts by the sound of Donna’s car starting and her curiosity kicked in, she began to wonder what would make Donna leave her house so late and where was it that she needed to be at so late at night.
A smile spread across her face, she knew she was going to trail Donna again, so she leaped off the roof and landed on the ground by the side of the house.
“Fuck!” she cursed as her foot struck a stone, with her heel sinking into a rose bush thorn. She had not worn any shoes because it was more comfortable and a lot more quiet walking around on a roof barefoot. She limped as she walked out of the yard and away from the house undetected.
She stood in the middle of the street and watched as Donna’s car drove away and disappeared into the night, she cursed again knowing that she would not be able to follow her now, but at least she had gotten a valuable piece of information that she could use to her advantage.
“That should do for tonight.” she said to herself, resigning to return back home. “Till next time we happen to meet, Donna Brooks.”
