Chapter Moving Away

Betty turned to look at her daughter, a frown forming on her face. “You did what?”

Donna sighed. “He said he need to talk to me and he kept pestering, I just had to so I could get him off my back.”

Betty sat up. “Donna that kind of man never gets off your back, you give him an inch and he takes a yard! Don’t you ever learn, Donna!”

Donna lowered her eyes, she knew this would not sit well with her mother and now she was regretting even bringing it up.

“When did you meet with him?” she asked.

“A few nights ago, I don’t know if I told you that he had almost trailed me home one night.” she sighed. “He was that desperate.”

“What did you two talk about?”

“Basically he explained to me why he had to call off the wedding when he did.”

Betty rolled her eyes. “And only after six years did he feel the need to give you an explanation? He can go to hell!”

Donna chuckled slightly. “But we have hidden away from him for those six years, we can’t blame him for that.”

Betty narrowed her eyes on Donna. “Are you going soft for him, Donna?”

Donna’s eyes shot up to her mother’s. “No mum!” she quickly defended then her voice went low again. “I’m just saying…”

“Well forget about him then, he had abandoned you for another, let that stay in your memories so you will be reminded of it and never you go back to him.”

“I don’t have such thoughts of going back to him.” Donna said, her attention was back on her fingers.

Betty looked at her daughter, not completely convinced of what she had said. Donna had always been soft, and she usually found it hard letting go. Betty could recall it took years for Donna to accept her father’s death and she knew six years was not enough for Donna to move on from Jeremy, only another relationship could save her seeing that she could not do this on her own just yet. She sighed and leaned back on the sofa.

“You should go see Wayne, find out if he is moving.”

Donna sighed and made to get up from the sofa, but just then, Betty remembered what she had wanted to ask her before and then took a hold of her daughter’s hand to keep her back seated on the sofa. Donna looked at her mother in confusion.

“Mum, Anything else?”

“You said your boss bailed you and you stayed in his house the night with Alix.”

Donna nodded slowly and her eye brows furrowed in question. “Yes, that’s right.”

Betty gave a sinister smile as she adjusted her position on the sofa, moving closer to her daughter with her hand still wrapped around Donna’s wrist.

“So what happened?”

Donna sighed. “He came to the station because he was the one that was called and he got Alix and I out, I’m guessing it was because he doesn’t know where I live exactly, although he does have my address…” she seemed to ponder on that, true, Keith had her address so why didn’t he just bring her here. She went on. “Or maybe it was more convenient for him to go to his place, so we stayed the night there.”

Betty nodded her head, following Donna’s story, but a frown came on her face when Donna finished. “And then?”

Donna frowned slightly now. “And then we came back?”

Betty rolled her eyes with a sigh. “I mean at his place, what happened? Between the two of you.”

“What happ- mum!” Donna exclaimed, she yanked her hand free from her mother’s grip, finally understanding what her mother was trying to ask. “He is my boss and I am his personal secretary, we share a professional relationship!”

“Just as I had suspected.” Betty sighed and rolled her eyes. “I just still wanted to hope for something.”

Donna got up from the sofa was walked towards the door. “The sooner you stop thinking about that, the less disappointed you would become. Nothing is ever going to happened between Keith and I, he doesn’t even see me in that light.”

“But common baby…” Betty leaned forward on the sofa in her direction, watching as she dug her feet into a pair of slippers. “The man looks out for you and takes proper care of you-”

“Like an employer should take care of is employees mum.” she said, cutting her mother short of what she was going to say. “Like an employer to an employee.” she repeated, stressing the words “employer” and “employee”.

“Be practical Donna.”

“Get real mum.” she said and turned to open the front door. “It’s not gonna happen.”

From the side walk in front of her house, she could see a truck parked in front of Wayne’s house, packed in it were a few furnitures and suitcases. It did look like he was moving out.

She walked down toward his house and when she sighted him coming out of the house, holding what seemed to be a small briefcase, she yelled out his name to get his attention.

Wayne!” she called out to him, waving her hand proper in the air with a smile. Wayne only looked in her direction briefly and without responding to her greeting, he went back to what he was dong.

Donna found that odd that he would ignore her so she walked on until she got to where the truck carrying little of his things was parked.

“Hi Wayne.” she said again, sure that he had heard her but he still did not respond.

“Wayne?”

He faced her now, his eyebrows furrowed as if in anger. “Donna, as you can see, I am very busy packing my things, could I be allowed a little space?”

That took her back a little and she wondered why he would be hostile to her all of a sudden. She chose to brush that to the side, following him as he walked back towards the house.

“Are you moving away?” she asked, but again he ignored her, she just went on talking with a smile playing on her face.“You could drop your new address and I would be sure to come visit when I can.

“No,” he lifted a hand to her without stopping to look at her. “I don’t want you visiting me.”

“Why?” she frowned and then pulled at his arm, forcing him to face her. Her face held a pained expression. “Did I do something wrong? If I did then I’m sorry, but at lease talk to me, you-”

“Donna,” he said, cutting her off. “I would really appreciate it if you stayed away from me, please.” he turned to leave but she stepped in, blocking his path.

“What happened Wayne?” she searched his eyes and his face but he would not maintain eye contact with her. She wished she could read his min. “I thought we were having a great time getting to know each other-”

“Yeah and I thought that too.”

She forced a smile, feeling her eyes sting with tears. “So what happened? Is it me? Tell me if I did anything wrong, Wayne, please.”

Wayne sighed, he was hurting just as much as she was because even if he had only gotten close to her for the sake of getting information from her about Keith and the company, he could not deny that in the few days they had come to know each other, he was actually beginning to like her. Truly.

“Wayne?” she called out to him.

“Just say away Donna.” He sighed and shoved her aside. “This is goodbye.”
