Skyla was getting dizzier by the second. She had come here today just for an outing and a casual meal, hoping that her husband would at least act nice to her in front of his new boss.
No way was she prepared that her husband’s new boss would be the enigmatic Zyair Kincaid and that he would offer her a job.
She knew the man hadn’t revealed his face to the media and was an enigma but she hadn’t thought he would be such an unfathomable puzzle. The way he has been addressing and talking to her took her completely off guard.
Unlike the first time she met Doran and thought there was something off about him irrespective of his charming personality. Meeting Zyair had this calming effect on her. There was something very serene about this man and he didn’t seem like a complete stranger to her.
That softness his eyes possessed only descended when he spoke to her. Was he really interested in her opinion or was it just a game to him just like her husband?
And, now this job offer and how Doran had readily agreed. Once Zyair had excused himself, letting them talk it out, Doran had spoken.
"I want you to accept this job, Skyla. You always complained about how I never let you pursue a career. Well, it’s your chance to prove your worth."
Skyla blinked at her husband, knowing too well he would have some nefarious intentions behind this for he certainly didn’t care about her needs and desires.
"Prove my worth? I don’t know anything about being a secretary, nor am I qualified enough for that position," she said in exasperation. Did he want her to make a fool of herself and prove to him that she was good for nothing but only to be a housewife?
"Do as I say. You will say yes to his offer, rest we will discuss at home," Doran told her in a hushed voice. The dead seriousness of his tone told her this was not up for debate.
Skyla kept quiet after and when Zyair returned and asked her she had to say yes. But she ensured to let Zyair know she was not qualified for the position he was offering her.
She was hoping that Zyair would step back from his offer after hearing her out but the man with the mask proved to be more determined than ever. Maybe both men had pre-planned her humiliation.
She was already working on her comic but no way she was going to tell either one of them about it. Skyla had to somehow make this work.
And then Zyair told her about his condition. That explained why he never shook hands with either of them and why Doran had told her earlier to keep her distance from him.
"I will keep that in mind, Mr. Zyair," Skyla stated, keeping a straight face.
"See you tomorrow then. 9 am sharp, I don’t like tardiness. Be on time. We will discuss the details of your contract and pay," his tone was firm but not condescending, unlike her husband.
"Mr. Doran we will draw the terms of our contract and send it to you in a few days. You can sign it afterwards," Zyair turned his attention to Doran. His lithe fingers drummed the table in rhythmic movement.
"Looking forward to it Mr. Zyair. I want this collaboration to work," Doran answered as they further discussed the business dealings.
Before they took their leave Skyla offered her condolences to Zyair on the passing of his adopted father. She had seen it on the news and knew it was the right thing to do. Zyair accepted it with a swift nod, not saying much on the topic.
It was late in the night when Doran and Skyla took leave from Zyair to head back home.
"Thank you for your hospitality and the job offer," Skyla offered her gratitude, her heart going berserk inside her ribcage.
She was so afraid of tomorrow now, knowing that working for such a powerful man would not be a piece of cake. What if he turned out to be worse than her husband? Her mental state was nowhere near to bear any more toxicity.
"I am looking forward to working with you," the fine lines of his eyes spread a bit showing he was smiling underneath the mask.
Skyla wondered if that was a sarcastic smile. The man had just met her and had practically no knowledge about who she was. Why would he want to give such an important position to someone as inexperienced as her?
Where was his last secretary? Was there any hidden agenda behind her hiring?
She felt like a pawn in this game of chess between these two powerful men of Angel City. Skyla walked away with these disheartening thoughts. Unaware that those deep oceanic eyes watched her receding form until she disappeared from his sight.
Once they were inside the car Skyla turned her attention to her husband and asked.
"What are you planning?" she knew he would never agree to something which didn’t benefit him directly.
Doran who was buried in his phone slowly turned his head and faced her. His lips thinned out in displeasure.
"Information, as much information as possible on him and his company. That’s what I want. And how else to achieve that than to have my pretty wife be placed as his personal secretary? So you will be a good wife and spy on him for me. Give me any and every detail you will find. Failing to do so and you know what I am capable of."
Doran’s voice was a low growl and it chilled Skyla to her bones. Knowing him she understood what it meant to cross him. But could she actually do that? Spy on her boss and betray the trust he would be providing in her.
But most importantly her husband wanted to see her fail so he could poke fun at her.
’No, I wouldn’t fail. I will prove to this man and the world that I am capable enough to hold this job. I will not give him any information that might jeopardise my position or the company I will be working with. No matter what he tries I will not waver from my values.’ Skyla promised herself.
