29: Misunderstanding
The current situation was, how to put it... well, rather inappropriate for children.
Although their abilities were quite lacking, the resilience of these young heroes did make Bai Ling and the observing elderly people nod approvingly in their hearts.
"So really, why bother?" Leticia crossed her arms, saying with a look of pity. "I was originally planning to slack off, but ended up having to take action anyway."
"You looked more like you were playing around." Bai Ling returned to Leticia's side, saying coldly.
Unlike Bai Ling's swift and decisive actions, the battle between Leticia and Xia Xia appeared rather playful.
It was completely Leticia unilaterally toying with this girl called Xia Xia.
"Look at what you're saying—I was just waiting for you to finish dealing with your side, okay?" Leticia shrugged her shoulders, indicating she hadn't deliberately slacked off. "Though, I keep feeling like this girl's voice sounds familiar."
"Your friend?" Bai Ling's eyebrows, hidden under her mask, raised slightly.
Leticia shook her head. "I don't have things like friends. A king doesn't need friends."
"How pitiful indeed."
"I think you're the least qualified person to say that." Leticia rolled her eyes. "Alright, problem solved, time to go home and sleep."
Bai Ling didn't react much, but stared blankly at the black briefcase in Leticia's hands. Her old friend hadn't mentioned this part before.
"What's inside this?"
"How should I know? Wasn't it given to me by your people?" Leticia indicated she had just received it, so how would she know what was inside. "Probably something worthless."
"Something feels off... Hm?" Bai Ling suddenly looked toward the direction the trio had come from. "Someone else is coming."
"I remember this road basically has no one coming through, right?" Leticia was also puzzled. Although she hadn't gone out, she had seen the so-called 'Central City's Most Deserted Streets Ranking' online.
The street they were standing on was ranked second on that list.
What kind of day was today that made this road so lively?
A disheveled figure appeared under the dim streetlight, wearing a black coat with several pieces of bright silver rope net fragments hanging from his body.
His expression was quite urgent, and after seeing the one black and one white figures standing not far away and the three youths lying scattered on the ground, this person's expression became somewhat broken.
"Are you two... those helpers we called for?" He covered his right eye with one hand and asked Bai Ling and Leticia.
Bai Ling nodded.
"You're the one who came to clean up? Your timing is really perfect, but those things on your body..." Leticia appeared much more active.
The man covered his face and sighed deeply. "Sigh, I'm the one they were supposed to chase."
"Hah?"
"?"
Both girls tilted their heads simultaneously. If this person was the one those three brats were supposed to chase, then what was that black-clothed person who ran past earlier?
"Wait wait wait, let me open this briefcase." Leticia quickly put the briefcase on the ground. "I hope there's nothing precious inside."
She had just used this thing as a hammer several times, hoping the contents weren't fragile items.
The briefcase lock naturally couldn't stump Leticia. She lightly flicked her finger at the lock, and the seemingly sturdy lock split open directly.
Leticia's violent lock-picking method—convenient and fast, just a bit hard on the locks.
"Phew, let me see..." Leticia opened the briefcase lid, and a small earth-yellow book appeared in her view. "It's actually a book?"
Bai Ling also came over to Leticia's side at this moment. "'Mythological Age Magic Studies', hmm..."
"Could this be some book written by someone with chuunibyou? Are there still mages in the human world?" Leticia curled her lip disdainfully.
She thought it would be something good, but this was it?
Modern humans could no longer use magic, so this magic book from the human world obviously had no credibility.
"I wouldn't know about that, but it looks like stolen goods that somehow ended up in you two ladies' hands." The man who had chased after them explained. "Let me take it back first..."
"That won't do." Before the man could finish, Leticia refused. "You say this was stolen by that person earlier, but how do I know you're not the thief who failed?"
"I can show you my credentials."
"Credentials can be forged, and so can people." Leticia shook her head. "Although I have doubts about this book's credibility, since it involves matters from the Divine Era, we can't be careless."
"Your expression is very serious. Is this book important?" Bai Ling asked softly in Leticia's ear.
"Not important to me, but if it falls into the hands of someone with ulterior motives, this world probably won't have any peaceful days. I don't want my games to suddenly lose power and internet connection halfway through."
"That answer is quite your style."
"Thanks for the compliment. Sir, you should have someone this lady recognizes come to take this book. Until then, we'll keep this book in our custody, if that's acceptable?"
