Chapter 40. EARSHOT

Who knows. Luke didn't know how to describe it anymore.

As before, Luke was allowed to go home, but they didn't let Luke go unattended because Luke had already injured people twice. Luckily, Ben is a veteran so he knows he has to lobby everyone so that Luke doesn't end up in a temporary detention cell like other underage criminals.

"Stay cool. I've already contacted Clark Larson," Ben told Ulfa after going down the hall at the police station to make a call to someone. Ben continued, “You remember him, Ulfa? He's the son of my best friend, Benjamin Larson. Since childhood, Luke often invites Clark for camping. Who would have thought that now he is a major in Prespectophia. Ha ha…"

Luke knew that Ben was trying to comfort Ulfa who kept on crying. However, Luke himself also couldn't find anything funny about that sentence. So, never mind. Luke chose to let it go, then the atmosphere became awkward again.

On the other hand, Luke heard someone talking like this, “Suck. He didn't want to say a word. Do you believe, he has already thrown a kid who is bigger than him. Really crazy! Kids these days are brutal."

It was indeed a series of ordinary sentences. However, what was unusual was the fact that the owner of the voice wasn't around. Luke recognized the owner of the voice because he was the one who asked about a hundred questions and kept Luke in the interrogation room for five or six hours, to the point where Luke felt his ass would flatten any longer in the interrogation room. Luke's ears heard it faintly as his mind went blank and only came to his senses after Ben arrived before them. Then, Luke looked around to look for the police officer, but all Luke found were several other problem children bruised from fighting, a middle-aged man in handcuffs, and several other officers with unfamiliar faces. To be honest, Luke didn't care what the interrogator had said, but there was an urge inside him to find the owner of the voice that Luke ignored Ben's awkward laugh and got up. Walk towards the fork in the hall and choose to the right.

"Luke, where are you going?" Ulfa called out to Luke.

But Luke was more focused on the voice of the interrogator still talking in the distance.

“Leave it alone, Ulfa. Maybe he wants to go to the bathroom or calm his mind for a bit,” whispered Ben.

Well, right. Very weird. Even though Ben and Luke were about three or four meters apart, Luke could still hear his whisper quite clearly. I don't know. Yeah… Luke knew that this situation was weird and a waste of time, but something inside Luke still pushed Luke to focus only on the interrogation officer. His feet seemed to walk alone through every aisle and his mouth would automatically say; "I'm looking for Major Larson's room. He's my uncle,” whenever an officer asked why Luke was hanging around the corridors of the police station. Maybe the effect was because Luke heard Ben say that name, but in fact several officers immediately pointed towards the second floor.

So Luke got up there. Now the owner of the voice is not just one, but there are two or three. One of them is a female voice.

“… I don't know, sir . I don't feel that child is dangerous. But she looks…” Until now Luke couldn't hear what the woman was saying.

Anyway, the three voices were rising and falling but they got clearer when Luke stopped in a hallway with a sign saying 'Pantry' on the second floor. Even though Luke had tried his best to stop his footsteps, his feet seemed to move on their own and only stopped when they were in the doorway. So now Luke saw it. The three people chatting. They were the police officer, the psychiatrist Joyce Welch who was holding up a mug of bunny, and a large man Luke didn't recognize.

Before that, let's think about this for a second; The distance between Luke's seat and the pantry location on the second floor was quite far. Passing several alley turns and being on a different floor. Was it natural that Luke could hear voices this far? Or is there a scientific explanation such as; daydreaming can make one's hearing sharper, or the impact of throwing a jerk out a window can make one's ears more sensitive. Or something like that? Luke doubted, but Luke would try to find some articles about Luke's sudden hearing loss.

Now back to the three people in the pantry. The three of them stopped talking as Luke came in, stared at him for a moment then Joyce Welch put down the glass, then smiled at Luke.

“Oh… hi, Luke. How did you get here? Are you lost?” Joyce Welch greeted her in a friendly voice.

Meanwhile, a large person whispered softly to the officer at his side.

"That girl? He's the one? Why are you allowed to be allowed to roam in the police station?”

"I'm looking for a toilet," Luke answered.

"Ah, so it seems. Let me take you to the toilet and then we go back to your grandparents, okay?”

Joyce Welch walked with Luke to the men's restroom and it was unexpected because when he got there, after Luke pretended to go into the cubicle to urinate, Joyce was still waiting in front of the sink asking. He held his left arm and stared deeply.

"Wait Luke. Let me ask you a thing or two. It won't be long and no one will hear. There's no CCTV here either, so if you have something to say, you can say it now,” said Joyce, who looked like she really wanted to convince Luke to discuss what happened in the incident this morning.

Luke didn't know whether to nod or shake his head because Luke really had nothing to say. It's useless. They wouldn't believe it if they said that Luke heard a voice and had a strange urge to do so. Even so, Luke allowed him to ask questions.

“I know that you have sound reasons for how you managed to throw Adam Bowleans out the window and I also understand that the reason you chose to remain silent during the interrogation session earlier was because you did not want what you said to incriminate you. Did I guess right, son?”

Joyce was rambling so fast that Luke couldn't quite digest what he had just said, so Luke asked reflexively.

" Sorry? I don't understand what you are talking about. ”

He exhaled and rolled his eyes. Then said again, “In essence, I feel that you did not do the act on purpose. Is it true ?

Luke nodded slowly. Ah, it feels a bit relieved that someone understands him. Then Joyce asked again.

" Did you hear voices in your head or something, Luke?"
