Chapter 38

~Sophia POV~

After my treatment from the fight with Lucas and Jessica, I was exhausted and hurting. As I walked back to the mansion, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Derick's intervention. He warned Lucas and Jessica about their actions towards me, and I could sense the fear in their eyes as they realized they had overstepped their boundaries.

But as grateful as I was, I couldn't deny the growing feeling of discomfort I had around Derick. He had started showing interest in me, and I knew that his followers wouldn't be happy about it. I wanted to avoid any trouble, so I made sure to keep my distance from him.

One day, Derick invited me to dinner, and I hesitantly accepted. As we sat at the table, I could feel the stares of his followers on us. But despite that, Derick and I had a pleasant conversation. He was looking charming, intelligent, and surprisingly kind that night.

As the night progressed, I started to let my guard down, and I even found myself laughing at his jokes. But just as things were starting to feel comfortable, one of his followers barged into the room, interrupting our conversation.

"Alpha Derick, we have an emergency," the follower said, his voice urgent.

Derick sighed and turned to me. "I'm sorry, Sophia. Duty calls."

I nodded understandingly, but inside, I felt relieved. I knew that pursuing anything with Derick would only lead to trouble.

The next day, as I walked through the mansion garden, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being followed. Suddenly, I heard a voice behind me.

"Sophia."

I turned around to see Derick standing there, looking serious.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

He took a deep breath. "I know that my followers don't approve of us spending time together, but I can't help the way I feel about you. Sophia, I want you to know that I'm willing to do whatever it takes to be with you."

I felt a mix of emotions – flattered, but also nervous. I knew that if I gave in to my feelings for him, it would cause chaos in the pack.

"Derick, I appreciate your honesty, but I don't think it's a good idea for us to pursue anything," I said, trying to be gentle.

He looked disappointed, but he nodded understandingly.

"I understand. But just know that I'll always be here for you, Sophia."

With that, he turned and walked away, and I was left with a mix of conflicting emotions.

Despite my efforts to avoid Derick, he never stop and continued to show interest in me. He would often try to talk to me or sit next to me during pack meetings, but I always kept my distance, knowing that it would only cause trouble with his followers.

One day, after a pack meeting, I was heading back to my quarters when I heard someone calling my name. I turned around to see Derick jogging towards me.

"Sophia, wait up," he said, panting slightly.

I stopped and waited for him to catch up, but I kept a safe distance.

"What do you want, Alpha?" I asked, trying to keep my voice neutral.

Derick frowned at my formal tone. "Please, call me Derick. And I just wanted to check up on you. You've been avoiding me lately."

I shifted uncomfortably. "I just don't want to cause any trouble with your followers. They don't seem to like me very much."

Derick sighed. "Yes, I'm aware of that. But you shouldn't let them dictate who you can and cannot talk to. You're a member of this pack now and you deserve to be treated with respect."

I was surprised by his words, but I appreciated the sentiment. "Thank you, Derick. But I still think it's best if I keep my distance."

Derick nodded, but I could see a hint of disappointment in his eyes. "I understand. But just know that I'm here for you if you ever need anything."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me to ponder over his words.

The next day, during a pack training session, Lucas and Jessica started making snide comments about me again, but this time Derick was there to witness it.

"Lucas, Jessica," Derick called out, his voice carrying a stern tone. "I don't appreciate the way you're treating Sophia. As members of this pack, it's your duty to treat each other with respect and dignity."

Lucas and Jessica looked taken aback, clearly surprised that Derick was calling them out.

"I'm sorry, Alpha," Lucas said, his voice laced with sarcasm. "We didn't realize we were disrespecting our dear pack member Sophia."

Jessica snickered at Lucas's comment, but Derick wasn't amused.

"I suggest you both apologize to Sophia right now," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Lucas and Jessica begrudgingly turned to face me, and after a moment of silence, they muttered a half-hearted apology.

I didn't believe their apology was sincere, but I appreciated Derick standing up for me. As much as I tried to avoid him, I couldn't deny the fact that he was a good leader, and a part of me couldn't help but feel drawn to him.

But I knew that pursuing anything with him would only cause more trouble, and I didn't want to risk my safety for a potential relationship.

So I kept my distance, even as Derick continued to show interest in me. But little did I know, my decision to avoid him would soon be put to the test.

I could feel Lucas and Jessica's hostility towards me, and I knew I had to be on guard around them. I also knew that they were capable of doing anything to get rid of me. So, I decided to keep a low profile and stay out of their way.

But one day, I overheard Lucas and Jessica talking about their plan to look for Mia. They wanted to team up with her and figure out a way to get rid of me.

I knew I had to do something about it, but I didn't know what. I couldn't just confront them about it, as that would only make things worse.

So, I decided to seek the help of Alpha Derick. I knew he had a soft spot for me, and I hoped he would be willing to help me out.

I went to see him in his office, and he was surprised to see me. I told him about Lucas and Jessica's plan and how I was worried about my safety.

Derick listened to me patiently, and when I was done, he leaned back in his chair and sighed. "I had a feeling something like this would happen," he said. "Lucas and Jessica have always been troublemakers. But don't worry, I'll take care of it."

He then summoned Lucas and Jessica to his office and warned them about their actions towards me. He told them that he wouldn't tolerate any behavior that put the safety of his pack members at risk.

Lucas and Jessica were taken aback by Derick's stern warning, and they quickly backed down. But I knew they wouldn't give up that easily. They would find a way to get back at me.

As the days went by, I noticed that Derick was showing more interest in me. He would come up to me during pack gatherings and strike up a conversation. He would ask me about my day and how I was doing.

At first, I thought he was just being friendly, but then I realized that he was trying to pursue me. I didn't want to lead him on, as I knew it would only cause trouble which I don't want.

So, I politely declined his advances and tried to keep my distance. But Derick didn't give up that easily. He kept trying to win me over, and I knew it was only a matter of time before his followers found out about his interest in me.

*Miranda's Mansion*

Theresa eyes darting around the opulent decor as she searched for the source of her anger. And there she was, sitting on the couch with a glass of wine in her hand - Amanda, the woman who had caused her so much pain in the past.

Theresa's fists clenched at her sides as she strode towards Amanda. "What are you doing here?" she hissed, her voice barely contained.

Amanda looked up at Theresa with a smirk on her face. "Well, hello there, little Theresa. So good to see you again."

Theresa's nostrils flared with anger. "Don't you dare call me that," she spat. "What are you doing here? And why did Miranda let you in?"

Miranda, who had been standing nearby, spoke up. "Theresa, calm down. Amanda is here as my guest. She's been helping me with some pack matters."

Theresa rounded on Miranda, her eyes blazing. "How could you let her in here, Miranda? You know what her brother did to you. You know how Ethan, your stepfather treated you!"

Miranda sighed and placed a hand on Theresa's arm. "I know, Theresa, but Amanda is not the same person as Ethan. She's trying to make amends for what her brother did. And besides, this is my home. I can invite whoever I want."

Theresa shook off Miranda's hand and turned back to Amanda. "I don't care what you're trying to do. You're not welcome here. Get out of my sight."

Amanda stood up, her eyes narrowing. "I'm not going anywhere, Theresa. And you can't make me."

Theresa took a step towards Amanda, her fists balled up at her sides. "You don't know who you're dealing with, Amanda. If you don't leave right now, I will make sure you regret it."

Suddenly, the room was filled with the sound of a low growl. Everyone turned to see Miranda's eye's looking furious, standing in the doorway with her arms crossed.

"Enough of this!" She said.

Theresa took a step back from Amanda, her eyes wide with surprise. "Miranda, don't tell me you're supporting her."

Miranda eyes flicked from Theresa to Amanda and back again. "I asked Amanda to come here, Theresa. So, stop this! I respected you like a mother, don't make me lose the respect I have for you."

Theresa's face fell. "But Miranda, you know how Amanda always support her brother back then. You can't just forgive her like that."

Miranda expression turned cold. "I can forgive whoever I want, Theresa. And you will not tell me who I can or cannot associate with."

Theresa looked down at the ground, her anger deflating. "I'm sorry, Miranda. I just don't want to see you get hurt like before again."

Miranda softened her tone. "I understand that, Theresa. And I promise you, I will make sure Amanda does not cause any trouble."

Amanda spoke up. "Thank you, Miranda. I appreciate your support."

Miranda turned to Amanda with a small smile. "Of course, Amanda. I know you're trying to make amends. And who knows, maybe we can all move past our differences and work together for a better future."

Leah, who had been watching the exchange from the sidelines, couldn't help but roll her eyes. She knew her mother, Amanda's true nature and didn't trust her one bit.
