Theon parked the car in front of his mother's house again, it had been over two hours since we had left to go after Marcus and we didn't know what we would find there.
Theon, however, didn't seem to want to burst the bubble of happiness we had created inside that car, and I couldn't blame him for that. For me, just our conversation in that car was enough to make me forget about the whole mess that had happened.
Theon leaned in and kissed me again, erasing from my mind anything but the two of us. I brought my hand to the back of his neck, tangling my fingers in his hair.
I couldn't believe I had run away from this for so long, this was all I needed, and Henry certainly agreed with me, as he kept moving inside me.
But reality couldn't allow us to run away for so long, altered voices coming from inside the house caused us to separate immediately. Theon took a deep breath, looking worriedly at one of the windows.
" We have to get back there, don't we? " he looked tired.
" If we don't go back, they'll be more worried," I confirmed, indicating Theon's cell phone
which already had three missed calls from his mother, "besides, Lara will need support now.”
" I don't understand how Evangeline could have done this to her," Theon pulled away, leaning back in the car seat looking disappointed.
" Well, I don't know her that well," I remarked, leaning back in the seat, "but she seems to be the kind of woman who believes she can fix men.”
" By going over her sister's head? " he raised one eyebrow, looking unconvinced.
" I won't say that I understand, but right now what we can do is help Lara.”
" How?”
" I don't know. Maybe we can start by letting people know that the party is canceled," I nodded to Gregor's car, which had just parked behind ours.
Theon took a deep breath, muttering something in Greek before getting out of the car and hurrying to intercept his cousin before he reached the front door.
" Gregor, wait," Theon ordered.
The man came toward us, accompanied by Agatha, frowning at the shouting coming from inside the house.
" The party's been canceled," Theon took a deep breath, "you'd better go.”
" What happened?”
" Lara broke up with Marcus and the situation was not pretty " Theon explained.
" He broke up with her on her birthday? " the young man growled, looking annoyed.
If only he knew.
" I'm going in, Apollo.”
" Stay out of trouble, we don't need any accidents," Theon warned me.
“I’ll Try”
I offered him a reassuring smile, although I didn't feel very comfortable going in there without him. On the other hand, I knew that Lara would need support once this was over. I headed towards the door of the house after saying goodbye to the couple, while Theon gave a summary of everything that had happened.
As I was about to open the front door, Callie was quicker, coming out of the house carrying Dapnhe's backpack and narrowly avoiding bumping into me.
" If I were you, I'd go home now," she muttered, "these two are going to kill each other!”
I looked into the house and saw Iris standing between the two girls.
" I trusted you. And you took advantage of that," Lara accused, "you betrayed me in the worst way.”
" I told you, you just don't understand," Liny tried once again to justify herself.
" You played blind," Lara shouted, "We were both making plans in front of everyone and you were the only one who didn't see it? You expect me to believe that?”
" Lara, please... " Iris tried to calm her down.
" No! You can't defend her! " Lara shouted, “not after what she did!”
I closed the door behind me, drawing everyone's attention. Iris looked relieved to see me there, until she realized that Theon wasn't with her.
" Sam, where's Theon? " she asked.
" Where have you gone? " Lara narrowed her eyes as Liny threw herself angrily onto one of the couches.
" Theon's outside," I explained, "we both went, well....”
" Gone where? You disappeared with my brother in the middle of all this! " Lara accused, looking hurt, "You left me here alone with that thing over there!”
" I'm your sister, whether you like it or not," Liny sneered.
" Callie is my sister, you're a stranger to me, you're nothing but a…”
" Enough " Iris raised her voice, sounding tired of the situation.
The two of them shut up immediately, and luckily, Theon entered the house soon after, relieving me of the responsibility of revealing what we had done.
" Where have you been? " Lara asked again, turning her back to Evangeline.
" Isn't it obvious that the two of you went after that man? " Delphine murmured from the kitchen.
That information attracted the attention of all the women present and soon we saw all eyes turned in our direction.
" Did you go after that bastard? " Lara looked at us with a serious expression.
" Theon? " Iris looked at us.
Liny stood up from the couch, looking irritated by this information.
" What do you mean, you went after him? Do what?”
" Do what? I went to put that bastard in his place," Theon growled, "and make sure he never messes with any of my family again.”
" I hope you kicked his ass" Lara muttered.
" Theon, did you do this? " Iris looked up for confirmation with a grave expression on her face.
" You didn't do anything to him, did you? " Liny looked genuinely concerned.
" Nothing he didn't deserve," I murmured, feeling uncomfortable with Henry's movements inside me.
Lily's face twisted into an angry frown as she advanced toward us.
" You've done what? Have you lost your mind? " she raised her voice.
" Looks like you're the one who's lost your mind here," to my surprise, Theon spoke louder than his sister, letting his irritation take over his temper.
I'd never seen him get out of control like that, not with people in his family at least.
" You better not have hurt him," she pointed a finger at her brother nonchalantly before trying to follow him to the door.
" Where do you think you're going? " Iris held her daughter's arm, preventing her from leaving.
" She's going after that jerk, isn't it clear? " Lara practically spat.
" Don't talk like that about Mark, you don't know anything.”
" He abandoned your pregnant sister and then betrayed her. Do you really trust this guy? " I couldn't believe it.
" Let her go. They both deserve each other. They're worthless," Lara declared with contempt.
" Lara, don't talk about your sister like that " Iris looked lost at the situation.
" He has changed, OK? It will be different with us.”
" I told you not to put her middle name of Aphrodite," Delphine commented, now settled in a chair, watching every detail.
" Really, mama, that's what you want to talk about now?" Iris took a deep breath.
" Has the guy magically changed in the last few minutes for you? What do you think he has? A magic vagina? " I let all my exasperation show, ignoring the information Delphine let slip, they all have goddess names? " you won't…”
" The difference is that he likes me," she returned harshly, "and who do you think you are to have an opinion? You're only here because you made the mistake of impregnating my brother!”
" Liny," Theon growled.
I blinked in a daze, feeling a little annoyed at this attack, but quickly tried to calm myself as I felt Henry move again.
" Henry wasn't a mistake," I declared sharply.
" Only if it was for you, because if you hadn't shown up in my brother's life, he would have asked Harper to marry him like he planned," she measured me dismissively. “You two want to judge me, but at least I wasn't dumb enough to get pregnant in an attempt to hold on to a guy who wanted nothing to do with me.”
" Evangeline! " Iris exclaimed as I absorbed her words in utter shock.
Okay, I had always known about Theon's relationship with Harper, but was he going to propose? Did I get in his way that badly?
I felt Theon's hand on my shoulder, causing me to look in his direction. His expression was full of feelings. Anger, irritation, concern, and love.
That last feeling served to calm the storm inside me a little so that I could refocus on what was happening.
" What do you think you are talking about? " Lara shifted again.
" Marcus told me that you got pregnant so he wouldn't break up with you," the younger girl accused.
I took a deep breath feeling that irritation burning inside me. She's lucky I'm pregnant and I can't teach her a good lesson.
" I'm not staying another second in the same house as her," Lara warned her mother.
" And I'm not staying here," she muttered, walking back toward the door.
" You're not going after him! " Theon growled, heading toward her sister.
" You're not my father! You don't have a say in anything about my life," she returned dismissively.
" He's not your father, but I am your mother," Iris decided to interfere, "you shouldn't go after him.”
" I'm not fifteen anymore, you can't force me," she returned, "I know what I do, it's my life and you can't…”
" She can't!? She's the only one who has a say in anything," Theon approached his sister with a not very happy expression on his face.
I held his arm, preventing him from getting too involved in the situation. She was right, she was no longer a teenager.
" I'm not a child anymore," she pointed out angrily.
" No, you're a slut," Lara muttered before heading for the stairs.
" At least I'm not a…”
" THAT'S ENOUGH! " Iris shouted startling me " Is this really what you want, Evangeline? To turn your back on your family like this?”
" When my whole family turns against me, yes!”
" No one has turned against you," I pointed out.
" Why are you still here? You're not family," she returned, shushing me.
" Who says that? She is my family! " Theon came out in my defense.
Delphine's look showed that this comment had not gone unnoticed, and that I would be questioned later. But for the moment, she decided to intervene.
" Enough is enough. If the girl wants to go, let her go at once," she murmured, "prolonging this matter will do no good.”
" Well, this matter…”
" I told you to go, Evangeline," Delphine growled, "don't make me show you where the door is.”
The girl stared at her for a few seconds before turning and leaving. A tense silence fell over the room as she left, until Lara broke her daze, letting the tears flow silently before running towards her own room.
