"Freezing cold but I know we'll burn forever..." Kaiwan sang along with the song playing on his phone as he wiped his bike. He felt sorry towards his babies for not giving them a good polish ever since the day he'd driven Hannah to the house.
Zuriña walked into the garage with her phone, a worried look on her face.
"Have you heard about these incidents?" She asked and he turned to look at the screen of her phone. He didn't look surprised.
"The one where vampire locked up people in the basement?"
"Do you have any inside info on the case?"
"I do. That's only half of the story." He replied.
"The perp only targeted influential students at each college, such as departmental representatives. He was also specific about making sure the victims were from different majors. He wanted the students he drank from to be diverse so he only want for students representatives for a while but according to sources, he was said to target arts and physical education students."
Kaiwan nodded and she continued. "We've never seen cases of ordinary vampires planning their kills around specific preferences. Only an angel of death would have done that."
"That's true." Kaiwan replied, not shooting her a glance.
"Maybe this case is connected to an angel of death." She said.
"Or maybe it's has nothing to do with them."He replied, shocking her with his response. She didn't think he'd say that.
"But..."She was saying as he walked over to pop open his vitamins bottle, before he poured out two pills into his palms.
"Zuriña, it's a nice day out. Why don't we go have lunch later?" He asked and he swallowed the pills.
"Well...sure." She replied and he turned to look around.
"By the way, have you seen my keys anywhere?"He asked as he fumbled his hands through his pockets.
"You mean this?" She asked, raising a bunch of keys hooked to a keychain.
"Thanks."He replied and she threw it over to him. "Nice throw."
His phone rang and he walked over to pick his phone on the table. His expression seemed suspicious for a moment and quickly disappeared before she could confirm what she'd seen.
"Excuse me. I have to take this."He said and turned to walk out of the garage.
That was rather weird. The detective had never taken calls away from her.
"I was leaving anyway." She yelled out to he him and turned to head inside.
The way the detective had reacted to her question tugged at her mind as she walked in and that wasn't the only thing that was bothering her. The detective had been acting rather strange to her after she'd defeated Sahan and for some reasons she didn't know, she felt the detective was hiding something from her.
She closed the door to the main entrance behind her as she walked in and a glance at the winy told her Kaiwan was still on his call. The way he stood looked suspicious and she bit her lip as she tore her eyes off the window. Just what was going on with the detective? She wondered.
She sighed and walked past his room, headed for hers and she walked back on realizing that the door was partially opened. A part of her urged her to go in and take a look and another told her it was wrong to do so as there was something called privacy.
She soon felt in a tug of war, the angel part of her telling her it was completely wrong to go through his things despite how suspicious she felt and the devil part of her telling her, it wouldn't hurt to have a look around.
The devil part won and the door creaked open as she tiptoed in, hoping to have a quick look around.
She walked over to his table and there was some documents lying around, starting from a lease agreement to bank records, which all had one thing in common. A name, Katherine Smith. Who was she? An angel of death? He'd never brought up the name before though.
The documents weren't of any clues to her so she looked around and her eyes fell on a bottle of vitamins nearby. She walked over to take a closer look, being pills the detective took everyday.
Curiosity got a better hold of her and she popped the bottle open and was surprised to realize they weren't vitamins.
Her ears pricked up on hearing approaching footsteps and she returned the bottle before she hurried out.
So the detective had been lying to her, she sighed as she plodded to her room. She hadn't been wrong, the detective was really acting weird.
She sank into her bed and an idea popped into her head almost immediately and a smile crossed her lips.
"I'm sorry detective, but I have to double-check something first."
"Enjoy your meal." the waiter said after he'd dropped their meals on the table later that afternoon. Kaiwan had driven her to a restaurant and her eyes widened in surprise on the meal served before her.
"Detective..."
"I figured you were probably sick of drinking animal blood so I preordered soup made from oxblood. You can drink that, right?"He asked.
"Yeah, as long as I don't drink anything else in it."
"That's good."
She lowered her eyes to the soup which she hadn't had in a while. Father used to cook it for her from time to time because he'd thought she'd tire from just drinking animal blood.
Tears welled up in her eyes and she lifted her head, not wanting the detective to notice and his phone rang.
"Hello...yeah... Remember what I told you. You have to keep an eye out even if it's not our jurisdiction. We've got to make our presence known to deter vampires from committing crimes...Good. Did you get the file I sent you?...I expect results immediately, so get down to work... Alright."He said and hung up.
He dialled another number almost immediately. "Hi, this is Detective Miller...I see. That must have been a frightening experience for you..."He was saying and she guessed he was talking to one of the victims from the recent case.
He hung up a couple of minutes later after reassuring the victim to catch the perp and he turned to see she was staring at him.
"Why are you looking at me?"
"I feel you're always busy."
He smiled. "It fits my image if I have lots of work going on."
He dropped his eyes to his meal for a minute before he raised them again.
"Honestly...my family was attacked by vampires years ago... that's why I put my everything into what I do." He said and a part of her felt empathetic towards him despite his suspicious behaviors recently.
"Detective..."
He took out his vitamins bottle and she frowned. He was taking them again before the meal. "I must have bored you with my story...Let's dig in before the food gets cold."
"Sure." she replied.
So he was personally affected by vampires, she thought. However, she needed to double-check something first, despite his tale.
He took a spoonful of the food and the expression on his face showed something was wrong. He would be getting up soon, she told herself.
"I'll be right back." He said and she pretended to be concerned.
"Are you okay?"She asked.
"I'm going to the restroom."He said and rose up before he went to ask for directions to get to the restroom.
Was he really unaffected? She wondered as she watched him head for the restroom, before she rose to follow him.
He was sweating and was throwing up by the time she walked into the restroom and she folded her arms as she leaned by the door frame.
"Does your stomach hurt?"
"Yeah...I guess the soup was too salty."He replied, still holding on to the toilet bowl
"Or, maybe...you're someone who can't eat that kinda thing?" She asked and she saw him stiffen.
