Chapter 13: Decision

After their return from the luxurious vacation, life for Bella resumed its usual course. Her family slipped back into their established routines, their preoccupation with their social and business engagements leaving little room for Bella. It was as if the time spent in Greece had been merely a temporary respite from their usual neglect.

Feeling the familiar loneliness settle in, Bella found solace in reconnecting with her best friend, Lily. They met at their favourite café, a cozy spot where they had shared countless conversations and secrets over the years.

As they sipped on their lattes, Bella couldn't help but recount some of the events from their vacation. She spoke about the breathtaking views and the lavish villa. Lily listened intently, her playful and supportive nature shining through.

"So, Bella, what's it like living under the same roof with Mr. Hot? Is he as dreamy up close as he seems from afar?"

Bella, caught off guard by the teasing, felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment. She stammered for a moment, struggling to find the right words. "Well, I mean... it's not like that, Lily. He's just a family friend, and we barely spent time together during the vacation."

Lily, perceptive as ever, raised an eyebrow and continued to press gently.

"Come on, Bella, don't be shy. You can tell your best friend. Did he ever... you know, make your heart race or give you those butterflies in your stomach?"

Bella couldn't deny the truth in Lily's words. "It's complicated, Lily."

Bella decided to open up to her best friend about her feelings for Reid. With a hint of nervousness in her voice, she admitted, "Lily, it's more than just a crush. I think... I think I might be in love with Reid."

Lily, at first, couldn't help but react with her usual teasing tone. "Oh, Bella, so it's serious, huh? You've fallen head over heels for Mr. Hot after all."

But as she gazed into Bella's eyes and saw the sincerity there, Lily's teasing demeanor faded. She realized the depth of Bella's emotions and how much her friend was struggling with this unrequited love. Lily's playful smile turned into a sympathetic one, and she reached out to hold Bella's hand.

"Bella," Lily said softly, "I'm sorry for teasing you earlier. I can see that this is really affecting you. Unrequited love is tough, especially when it's someone as complicated as Reid, plus let's not mention that he is your father's best friend!"

Bella nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She appreciated Lily's understanding and support. "It's just... it's so hard, Lily. I can't control how I feel, and it hurts knowing that he'll never see me the same way. Plus the other drama from age difference and his ties with my family."

Lily squeezed Bella's hand reassuringly. "I know, Bella. It's okay to feel what you're feeling; we can't choose whom we fall in love with. And I promise I'll be here for you every step of the way, no matter how complicated things get."

At that moment, Bella felt grateful to have a friend like Lily, someone who could provide comfort and solace during the tumultuous journey of unrequited love.

After opening up about her feelings for Reid, Bella felt compelled to share the truth about what had happened at the swimming pool during their vacation. She took a deep breath and began to recount the moment when she had stumbled upon Reid and the brunette woman. Bella described the scene, the shock, the embarrassment, and the intense emotions that had overwhelmed her.

As Bella spoke, Lily's expression shifted from curiosity to shock. Her eyes widened, and her jaw dropped slightly, unable to form words. The revelation left her momentarily speechless, her mind trying to process the unexpected turn of events.

Bella continued to explain, her voice quivering with a mixture of embarrassment and vulnerability. She confessed how the incident had shaken her and added another layer of complexity to her feelings for Reid.

Lily finally found her voice, her eyes reflecting her empathy and concern.

"OMG!!!!!! Bella, I can't even imagine how difficult that must have been for you. It's a lot to handle, especially with everything else you're feeling."

Bella nodded, tears welling up in her eyes as she realized the depth of her friend's support. It was a relief to have someone to confide in, even if the situation was far from ideal.

Lily wrapped her arm around Bella, offering a comforting embrace that spoke volumes of their enduring friendship.

As the conversation between Bella and Lily continued, it naturally shifted towards Bella's choices for her future education. Lily, always a source of encouragement and support, wanted to know if Bella had decided on a management school and whether they might end up attending the same one.

Bella's response was tinged with disappointment as she sighed and admitted, "Lily, my family has pretty much made the decision for me. It looks like I'll be heading to one of those prestigious business management schools they've picked out."

Lily couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness for her friend. She knew how much Bella had yearned for a different path, one that would allow her to explore her passion for creative writing. It hurt to see Bella's dreams being pushed aside by her family's expectations.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Bella," Lily replied, her voice filled with empathy. "I know how much you love writing, and it's a shame that you might not get to pursue it right now."

Bella nodded, her expression reflecting her inner turmoil. "Yeah, it's frustrating. But, you know, my family's always had this idea of what's best for me, and it's hard to go against their wishes."

Lily placed a comforting hand on Bella's shoulder. "I understand, Bella, but it's also important for you to pursue your own happiness and passions. Maybe once you start university, you can find a way to balance your studies with your writing. Who knows what the future holds?"

Bella managed a small smile, appreciative of Lily's unwavering support. "You're right, Lily. I won't give up on my writing. Even if it's not my major, I'll find a way to keep doing what I love."

Curious about Lily's own academic path, Bella turned the conversation towards her friend's future plans. With a warm smile, she asked, "Lily, have you decided what you're going to study at university?"

Lily's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she leaned forward to share her excitement. "Oh, absolutely! I'm going to major in psychology. I have already chosen Standford. I've always been fascinated by the human mind, and I think it's a perfect fit for me. Plus, it leaves plenty of room for creativity and helping people, which is what I'm all about."

Bella couldn't help but feel happy for Lily, as her parents were way less restrictive than Bella’s and allowed Lily full freedom of her choices. Her friend's choice seemed like a perfect blend of her interests and talents.

"That's amazing, Lily. I can totally see you excelling in that field. You're going to be an incredible psychologist one day."

Lily beamed at Bella's words, appreciating her support. "Thank you, Bella. It means a lot coming from you. And who knows, maybe we'll end up studying at the same university after all, just pursuing different paths."

As Bella returned home in the evening, the atmosphere at the dinner table seemed tense. Her parents had been waiting for her to discuss the pressing matter of her university decision. Her father, in particular, had a stern look on his face, indicating the seriousness of the conversation that was about to unfold.

Without wasting any time, her father cleared his throat and spoke with a firm tone. "Bella, it's time we made a decision about which university you will attend for your higher education."

Bella knew this moment was coming, and she felt a sense of unease wash over her. She glanced at her mother, who wore a similar stern expression, and realized that this conversation wasn't going to be easy.

Her father continued, "You've been accepted into several prestigious business management programs, and we need to finalize your choice. It's essential for your future, Bella, and we want what's best for you."

Bella nodded, trying to hide her disappointment and the longing she had for a different path. She knew that her family had high expectations of her, but she couldn't help but wish for a chance to pursue her passion for creative writing.

With a forced smile, she replied, "I understand, Dad. I was considering Stanford."

Her mother exchanged a concerned glance with her father before responding.

"California? That's quite a distance from here, Bella. Are you sure about this?" her mother replied.

"Yes, Mom. I know it's far, but Stanford has an incredible reputation, and their business program is top-notch. Plus, it would give me some independence while still being within reach if you need me."

"Stanford, huh? Well, it's true that Stanford is renowned for its academic excellence." her father replied with his usual business face.

Her parents pondered the idea for a moment, and Bella hoped that the mention of Stanford's reputation would help sway their opinion; she really didn’t care too much if it was Stanford or another university, as she was not thrilled about the business school idea, but at least Lily would be on the same campus.

"Well, if it's Stanford, we can't argue with that. It would be a great opportunity for you, Bella." her mother replied, looking at her husband.

"Indeed, Bella. We want what's best for you, and if Stanford can offer that, then we support your decision. I will ask my secretary to handle the tuition immediately." her father replied decisively.

With her parents' reluctant agreement, Bella felt a mix of relief in this already tight situation. At least she will be able to breathe far away from her family and taste independence for the first time.
