Her parents worked hard so that she could grow up in a normal environment, even though their lives were mediocre, they lived in happiness and harmony.
Her family had been hiding for decades but later moved to Clifford town, after her dad had claimed the family had work to do there. Although they couldn't savour the taste of food, they managed to set up a restaurant with help from their neighbours.
Her mum and dad had told her not to hang out with others so much, for the fear of being known that she was a vampire but having Yiannais as a friend was her greatest joy. Not long her parents were aware of her friendship with Yiannais but they hadn't objected to it as long as they couldn't meet elsewhere except for the restaurant.
Their friendship blossomed through that process. Yiannais had brought her books, he had borrowed from the library at their school and often skipped classes most times, to be with her and in turn she had excused herself from her duties, to meet him at their secret place. It didn't matter, as long as she was happy.
But that happiness began to do in the one day. "More oxblood soup?" Her mother had asked as they headed out for home, one day.
"Yeah."
"Zuriña, you had four bowls of oxblood soup. You're going to get indigestion."
Her father had carried her in his arms.
"Let her be, honey."
"Sweetie..."
"My little princess wants more soup, more soup she'll get." He said and they chuckled and her mother rolled her eyes.
Clifford town had been the domain of gangsters who bullied weak people for money and on that day when they turned to head back to the restaurant, Yiannais was the victim.
"Yian?" She had called and her parents had been totally shocked to see Yiannais, holding a knife and pointing at towards them.
"Ha...hand over your money." He'd stuttered, afraid to look them in the eye.
"Yian? What's wrong?"
Herr father had handed her over to her mother, who had tried to block out the view but she had managed to peek.
"Son, it's okay." Her father had said ,trying to calm him down.
"Get their money." One of the thugs, had ground out and he'd lowered his head as he dropped the knife.
"I can't do this." Yiannais had said, tears crawling down his cheek.
"What?" The man had yelled out and made to hit the boy when her mother sped over to hit him, despite carrying her and the man had crashed into tins with a loud noise.
"You bitch..." Another thug had yelled and made to hit her mother, but her father had slapped the man on the chest before he could, and he'd passed out almost immediately.
Yiannais had used the diversion to take to his heels as her parents dealt with the thugs and that had been the last time she'd seen him in a long while.
Due to what'd happened that night, her parents had made the decision to relocate as it was their principle, to use their powers in front of humans.
She'd been upset about it but her dad had granted the permission to say goodbye to Yiannais.
The only place she knew he stayed was their safe place which was around in the market and although she hadn't seen him for days, she'd gone to the safe place one more time and had been surprised to see a completely beaten up, Yian on the floor and covered in blood. Panic had sent her running back home to call the parents, who were shocked by the scene.
Her father had examined Yian and shook his head. "It looks like people have been bothering him." He'd said.
"Who would ever do this to a child?" Her mother had asked as she'd her mouth with her palms.
"His organs are damaged and many of his bones are broken but it seems like he has been he's been like this for a while... Yiannais can't be saved, even if we took him to a bigger hospital, his condition might worsened on the way."
"I'll call an ambulance." Her mother had said and her father had turned to leave when she'd grabbed his leg.
"Dad? Where are you going?...Why about Yian?"
"Sweetie..."
"Dad, please save him. I know you can bring people back to life." She'd cried.
He'd been startled. "I can't. That's not bringing people back to life."
Her mother had sighed. "Riña, you must be very sad but you'll understand when you get older."
"We have the power to help others but do we have to live like this. Are you just going to leave him here like this?" She'd yelled as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Riña..." She'd turned to look at him. One of his eyes had been badly hurt and had been bleeding.
"Don't cry, Yian." Her father had sighed as her mother had whispered something about having an older brother and her father had bit his wrist and had given him his blood to drink.
Yiannais was healed who has surprised her the next day. His right eye had even recovered and she was about to take him out to play when her father had stopped her by saying he could not go out.
"I can't go outside?"
"That's right. You can't show your face in this neighborhood."
He'd lowered his head and she'd felt sad for him."Then how do I..."
"That's why we are moving to the mountains." His head had gone up instantly. "The mountains?"
"We have to live in isolation"
"Iso..."
Her mother had slapped her father's back. This man, if you want to explain, explain properly." She'd clicked her tongue and turned to him. "Yiannais, now you're a half human, half vampire and a couple of other things will be explained later." She'd and took his hands in hers. "From this moment, you don't have to live for yourself. Do you understand?"
Tears had streamed down his cheeks.
"Thank you. I'm grateful."
