Chapter Don't kill her

Scarlett

My mate was the Alpha of the Black Moonstone pack and with that, he had to abide by the responsibilities his title carried.

I wouldn’t let him lose his wolf just because of me. I’ll have to convince Amber to break her spell and free Todd. I was sure that Klaus couldn’t shift since he had lost his connection with Todd which meant that he was feeble.

Jenna was sleeping peacefully so I slowly closed the door of her room and was aghast when I saw Marcus standing behind me.

“You scared me,” said I as I let out a low sigh of relief.

He bowed his head slightly. “Hello from your brand new bodyguard.”

I rolled my eyes and started strolling toward the last room on this floor. “You’re dismissed. I can take care of myself.”

“I can’t leave you alone when your mate has ordered me to stay with you like your shadow,” he winked at me. “Where are you headed?”

Turning my face back, I bit my lips nervously. I had to take his help, I couldn’t track down Amber alone so I decided to tell him the truth. “Your Alpha’s wolf is under Amber’s spell and only she can break her spell so I’m going to convince her to leave us alone and find her own mate.”

“What the actual fuck!” The muscles in his jaw started working as the anger seeped through his aura. “That’s why Klaus asked me to keep you away from Amber. I had no idea that his wife was a witch.”

My eyes spontaneously scrutinized when he mentioned Amber as my mate’s wife. Jealousy and fury stirred in my features. I cleared my throat and he kept his head down, mouthing sorry to me.

“You’ll stand outside of her room. I’ll let you know if I need help,” I divulged, not giving him a second to complain, and rushed to Amber's room.

“Be careful,” Marcus said in a low voice filled with concern. “We can’t afford to lose you.”

I nodded my head at him with a small smile and knocked on her door but when she didn’t answer after three attempts, I opened the door and entered her room.

“Amber,” I called her, taking a few tentative steps inside her room. I could feel my back burning from someone’s gaze but when I turned to see, there was no one.

“I know that you’re here,” my instincts were telling me that she was watching me from somewhere.

“Don’t you know everything, Scarlett?” A shadow passed by me and before I could assimilate who it was, Amber snapped at me, standing in front of me.

Though my heart was racing with fear, I didn’t let it show on my face. “If I had known, I wouldn't be here.” I shrugged, folding my arms across my chest.

“Let me guess you’re here because you want to free Todd from my spell,” her brows wriggled and a triumphant smirk protracted on her lips.

I wasn’t astonished to see how she had read my thoughts and knew literally everything about me. After all, she was a witch, not a werewolf.

“Don’t you have a little bit of dignity?” She provoked me. “I’m pregnant with your mate’s child and given how his family and pack love me and respect me, they will never accept you as their Luna.”

Amber pouted her lips like an innocent kid. “And you’ll have to tolerate hatred from everyone. No one will respect you ever.”

Her words caused me a headache, the way she was portraying everything, I knew that she was right but I wouldn’t let her manipulate me. I’ll not leave my mate.

“Thanks for showing concern for me, Amber. But what about you?” I pressed my lips before continuing, “will you ever get love from Klaus without using your powers? Do you think that he’ll accept you and start loving you if I leave?”

I clicked my tongue and ambled closer to her. “Even if you remove me from the picture, you can just get Klaus’s body, not his heart. His heart belongs to me. He’ll love only his mate.”

“Klaus will reject you and the Moon Goddess will mate me with him as his second chance mate,” her voice shivered a bit as she spoke.

“Do you think that the Goddess works according to your will?” I scoffed, she was insane. “I mistook you for being sharp-minded then. If the Goddess wanted you to mate with him, I wouldn’t be here in the first place.”

She rolled her eyes and sat on her bed. “Mistakes can happen from the Goddess, too.” The colors drained off her face and I knew that this was my only chance so I gathered all my courage and sat beside her.

“Deep inside, we both know the truth-”

“Can’t you see that I’m carrying his pup in my womb?” She screamed out furiously. “You’ll just be his mistress and if that’s what you will choose, your pups will be bastards. All of you will have to live with disgrace and hatred.”

Her words were like a dagger laced with wolfsbane piercing my heart. I tried to ignore the pain but it had wounded me badly and refused to let me gain my composure back.

“But you’re a witch. You don’t belong with us,” I still managed to utter to which she smirked, knowing all too well that she was winning in manipulating me.

“That doesn’t matter, honey. My father is the Alpha king and your poor mate's pack doesn't stand a chance in winning against my father’s pack,” she reasoned as I had presumed.

“Have you lost your mind? It’ll cause a war between werewolves and witches. Innocent people of both species will lose their lives just because of your inappropriate demand. Centuries ago, our ancestors made a treaty to save both species and we made peace by living in our own territory. You shouldn’t live where you don’t belong, Amber. Trust me, you’ll lose everything.”

In a split second, she stood in front of me, her body shivering from the outrage. “Do you think that it’s easy to be in my place? I didn’t ask my father to fuck a witch and bring me into this world where everyone despises me and I have to hide my identity to survive.”

The tears stung her eyes but she didn’t bother to stop them. I was stunned to say or do something. I hadn’t expected her to say those things to me. After all, she hated me and we weren’t close but seeing her in pain, I couldn't help but feel sympathy for her.

“Why should I care about everyone else’s feelings when no one ever cared about mine?” She started sobbing. “All they care about is their prestige for keeping their word. No one asked me ever about what I wanted and I kept accepting whatever they threw at me, hoping that one day, they would love me but they never did.”

Amber wasn’t wrong. She was lonely, she had no one to defend her here, and judging from her outburst, it didn’t seem like her family loved her either.

“Klaus, on the other hand, was my only hope to get love. I accepted him and loved him since childhood and expected the same from him but he never did and he never will,” Amber broke into a couple of sobs, kneeling on the floor.

I got up from my bed to comfort her but the voice in my head appeared out of nowhere, ‘you can’t trust her. She might harm you if you go closer to her in this situation. Stay away from her, you dumbass.’

It pained me to see her breaking down like this but I had to stay alert so I decided to follow my subconscious’s advice.

“You’re so lucky, Scarlett. He loves you. Even when I used my powers to make him love me, he kept calling me by your name and I realized how I was ignoring my morals to get him so I just slept my pain away that day,” she stared into my eyes hopelessly. “I’m not pregnant. I’m sorry, Scarlett. I’m really sorry for ruining everything for you.”

An invisible burden vanished from my heart the moment she admitted that she wasn’t pregnant. I sighed in relief and bit the insides of my cheeks nervously. I was still skeptical about whether I should trust her words or not but my heart knew that she was telling the truth. I wanted to trust my gut feelings.

“Thank you for telling me the truth, Amber,” I cooed to her and patted her shoulder. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware of your situation.”

She let out a sarcastic chuckle and the hair on my back straightened up. “Do you think that I’ll let you go after knowing my dark secret?”

“Don’t kill her. We need her,” a male voice’s sudden appearance caught me off guard.

Amber’s red eyes hypnotized me and the last thing I saw was her perplexed face before my eyelids became heavier and a wave of dizziness swept over me.
